Description of this Book
It is said that the standard of civilization of a given society can be measured by the way it treats its less fortunate citizens. It is the hope of the Melanesian Institute that, by publishing this book, it might help to raise awareness, understanding, and empathy towards disabled persons among Papua New Guineans in general and political leaders in particu In conducting the research projects into disabilities, the Melanesian Institute focused first of all its attention on the socio-cultural aspects of disabilities, like the explanations given by traditional Papua New Guineans, the attitudes of the community towards persons with disabilities, their insertion and participation in the social life, their contribution to families and clans, the tasks entrusted to them, the traditional healing methods of disability cure, etc. This kind of information is important for every modern institution which likes to address the disability phenomenon in a more effective way on a medical, social and economic level. The other focus of the research was that of finding out ways of preventing disabilities from happening or alleviating the damages caused by disabilities to individuals and communities. That's why the results of the research are normally accompanied by practical suggestions to health, church and civil authorities especially on how to better the lot of disabled persons in PNG societies. Unfortunately the PNG government, political leaders, and even the media have so far given little attention to this social phenomenon. Disabled persons are simply ignored and left to the care of their families and clans, which often simply hide them inside their houses. If little attention is given, it has more to do with the physical aspect of their impairment than the social and psychological consequences of it.
