Description of this Book

Get ready for the biggest NEW publishing phenomena of 2007! So you won't keep anything from me again? He put his hand to his chest. Cross my heart and hope to die. Okay then. Though you don't actually have a heart, she said. I know. And technically, you've already died. I know that too. Just so we're clear. Stephanie's uncle Gordon is a writer of horror fiction. But when he dies and leaves her his estate, Stephanie learns that while he may have written horror, it certainly wasn't fiction. Pursued by evil forces intent on recovering a mysterious key, Stephanie finds help from an unusual source -- the wisecracking skeleton of a dead wizard. When all hell breaks loose, it's lucky for Skulduggery that he's already dead. Though he's about to discover that being a skeleton doesn't stop you from being tortured, if the torturer is determined enough. And if there's anything Skulduggery hates, it's torture! Will evil win the day? Will Stephanie and Skulduggery stop bickering long enough to stop it? One thing's for sure: evil won't know what's hit it.

Awards & Reviews

Awards Shortlisted for Dublin Airport Authority Irish Children's Book of the Year Award: Senior 2008.
NZ Review Audiobooks are the new black. This is the truth. For those of us too busy being busy to read, audiobooks are a lifesaver. That's not to say they're all great because they're not, but when you get a great one, those earbuds aren't coming out until the fat lady starts singing. An audiobook has to work pretty damn hard - firstly, the story has to carry itself more than in print because it's incredibly easy to switch off and secondly, the narrator needs to be hand picked by very smart people in order for it to work - thankfully, Skulduggery Pleasant is one of the better audios picked up in the last month or two. Skulduggery Pleasant is one of those books that's sort of aimed at the younger crowd but is so well written, lovers of a great story will get a kick out of it whatever age they are. That's the crux of the detail but Rupert Degas has brought this book to life with no small amount of panache attached. A voice for every character pitched perfectly and a laconic pacing, makes it an absolute pleasure to be in the company of. If you hadn't figured it out already, Skulduggery Pleasant is a skeleton. He's also a detective. A detective skeleton if you like - and that much alone should tell you whether you'll like this or not. He embarks on his first adventure here and with his new sidekick, Stephanie, we are introduced to some cracking friendly characters and a good manner of original foes as we bear witness a thorough bonding of the two that will hopefully set the scene for plenty more books in the series. There is very little on the market at the moment that compares with this as an audio product - classy is an understatement. If you're looking for a fun listen that delivers on all fronts, this is as good as it gets in the audiobook world. Review from Burn Digital Magazine

Author's Bio

Derek Landy lives near Dublin. Before writing his children's story about a sharply-dressed skeleton detective, he wrote the screenplays for a zombie movie and a murderous horror film. I think my career-guidance teacher is spinning in her grave, he says, or she would be if she were dead.
