Description of this Book

Unpack the title and the author's intention and emphasis unfold. Gail Loane is recognised nationally, and beyond, and her work has always guided and supported teachers in helping children to write well. Her conviction that every child has a unique "voice" and "something to say" permeates this personal account of what works in the classroom. Do not expect prescriptions or checklists. Instead, Gail offers her thoughts on the teaching of writing, based on her wide experience and inquiry. What she has to say here is about the art of teaching the art of writing. Central is the belief that good writing is important and possible for young people, whatever their age and stage. Teaching is rewarding when children are able to be their real selves, and bring their own lives into the writing classroom. One chapter explores the use of the writing notebook as a way of building a daily writing habit, and as a vehicle for children to live "wide-awake" lives. And of course the notebook is a repository of moments which can be taken out later and crafted further. Another chapter shows how memoir can illuminate experience for both writer and reader. Each chapter ends with a summary of key ideas and practice. Included are thoughtfully selected models of writing, for a variety of purposes. There is an abundance of excellent writing by children, testifying to the success of Gail's classroom practice and her teaching of teachers. "I've Got Something to Say" is a practical and very useful guide for teachers at all levels and, in the words of Patricia Grace, reminds us "whaia te iti kahurangi - to cherish the small treasures of the heart." Susan Fraser Teacher of English (secondary)
