Description of this Book

He Tuhi Marei-kura is a Maori account of the creation based on the priestly lore of the Tainui people. The Maori story of the creation is characteristic of the tapu (sacred) lore of the race. This account is based principally on priestly recitals from the Whare Wananga (Sacred House of Learning) of the Tainui tribes of the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. This is a two volume set in Maori and English (Each volume) , He Tuhi Marei-kura was completed by Pei Te Hurinui Jones in the 1940-50s and is a culmination of years of research carried out amongst Tainui elders and leaders.

Pei Te Hurinui Jones (1898-1976) was an eminent Maori scholar, advisor to the Kangitanga and a respected leader in the revival and retention of the Maori language, cultural knowledge and heritage in the 20th century.
