Dr Conal McCarthy is Director of the Museum and Heritage Studies programme at Victoria University. He has worked as a teacher, art educator, exhibition interpreter, curator and lecturer, and his research interests include New Zealand art and architecture, museum history and theory, visitor research, and heritage issues. His first book Forrester and Lemon of Oamaru, Architects, a study of colonial architecture in North Otago, was published in 2002 by the Historic Places Trust and his latest, Exhibiting M?ori: A history of colonial cultures of display was published by Berg and Te Papa Press in 2007. He is editing the museum practice volume in a forthcoming Blackwell series of international handbooks of museum studies, general editors Sharon Macdonald and Helen Rees Leahy. In 2009 McCarthy took up a Visiting Fellowship in the Research School for the Humanities at the Australian National University in Canberra. He has presented papers at several national and international conferences, and has also written articles on a range of topics for a number of journals including: Museum History Journal, Museum and Society, Museum Management and Curatorship, The Journal of Australian Art Education, New Zealand Sociology, The Journal of New Zealand Literature, Te Ara: The Journal of Museums Aotearoa, Art New Zealand, and Sites.
