US Review In the cumulative tradition of The Old Woman and Her Pig, little rabbit's mother goes off in turn to Sleepy Rabbit, Duck, Hen, and Mouse to find carrots for hungry Little Rabbit. Sleepy Rabbit will give carrots and lettuce if Mother Rabbit gets him some feathers for his pillow; Duck will give feathers if Mother Rabbit will get her a rain barrel from Hen, and so on. Meanwhile Little Rabbit trails behind, is fed seeds by Duck, corn by Hen, and cheese by Mouse, and so is not hungry when Mother Rabbit finally acquires the carrots and lettuce. The story, told straight in an appendix, is presented in the body in rebus form: Maybe is may with a picture of a bee, pile is a pie plus le, and so on; and there are some pictures - a house, a little rabbit, a duck, etc. - that simply stand in for the words or names they represent. The rebus form and the publishers' designation suggest an audience of early-elementary-school readers; but with Linden's pastel-colored pictures, the package looks and sounds like a story to be read to pre-schoolers. A nostalgic novelty. (Kirkus Reviews)
