Description of this Book

This is the story of the fascinating King David. It begins when he is born and a curious scene occurs around his crib. As their seven brothers were older they went with their father Jesse to the countryside to take care of the sheep, to work in agriculture, to fish and sell sheep and their wool, etc. David stayed at home with his mother, Nitzevet, and she taught him the Hebrew letters and also taught him how to do household chores. David was very intelligent and learned to prepare olive oil, he learned how to prepare wine from the sweet grapes of his vineyard, he learned to prepare the delicious bread they ate every day and the rich cheese from the milk of the sheep. The rabbi taught David about the stars and to read Hebrew. One day David found a turtle shell and his father helped him make a lyre with her. He learned to play her. With much love he played the lyre, danced and sang to his Lord God. He worshiped his God Adonai by playing his lyre, singing and dancing. He was very strong and brave. He defeated a lion and a wild bear to defend his sheep. With a pebble and a sling he defeated the fearful giant Goliath of the Philistines. He won the war for Israel and became the king of Israel. He was a great king. As a poet, musician, shepherd of sheep, warrior and king, he always loved and served his God Adonai. Esta es la historia del fascinante Rey David. Empieza cuando l nace y ocurre una escena curiosa alrededor de su cuna. Como ya sus siete hermanos eran mayores se iban con su padre Jesse al campo a cuidar de las ovejas, a trabajar en la agricultura, a pescar y a vender ovejas y su lana, etc. David se quedaba en su casa con su madre, Nitzevet y ella le ense aba las letras hebreas y le ense aba tambi n a hacer las tareas del hogar. David era muy inteligente y aprendi a preparar el aceite de oliva, aprendi a preparar vino de las dulces uvas de su vi edo, aprendi a preparar el delicioso pan que com an todos los d as y el rico queso de la leche de las ovejas. El rabino le ense a David acerca de las estrellas y a leer Hebreo. Un d a David encontr un caparaz n de tortuga y su padre le ayud a hacer una lira con ella. l aprendi a tocarla. Con mucho amor tocaba la lira, danzaba y cantaba a su Se or Dios. l adoraba a su Dios Adonai tocando su lira, cantando y danzando. l era muy fuerte y valiente. Venci a un le n y a un oso salvaje para defender a sus ovejas. Con una piedrita y una honda venci al temeroso gigante Goliat de los filistinos. l gan la guerra para Israel y se convirti en el rey de Israel. Fue un gran rey. Como poeta, m sico, pastor de ovejas, guerrero y rey, siempre am y sirvi a su Dios Adonai.

Edia L. Velez was born in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico. She moved to the United States during 1960, graduated from Houston Baptist University, and taught elementary bilingual education at Houston Independent School District (HISD). She graduated from the Institute of Children's Literature in Connecticut. In 2001 she retired from the US Department of Education in Washington, DC, where she worked for eleven years. She has published four bilingual books for children: Jessica's Summer Vacation (Las vacaciones de verano de J ssica), The Tale of Bad Guts and Bad Blood (El cuento de Mala Entra ita y de Mala Sangre), and Zoe Meets Pierre (Zo conoce a Pierre). Edia has two daughters, Edia Zoe Lugo Husband and Lynette Lugo Petrie; a son, David Lugo, married to M nica; and five grandchildren. Her hobbies are writing for children, gardening, and reading. She lives in Buda, Texas. Edia L. Velez naci en San Sebastian, Puerto Rico. Ella se mud a los Estados Unidos durante los 1960. Se gradu de Houston Baptist University. Ella tiene dos hijas, Edia Zo Lugo Husband y Lynette Lugo Petrie, y su hijo David Lugo, casado con M nica, y cinco nietos. Su entretenimiento favorito es escribir para ni os, trabajar en su jard n, y leer. Ella vive en Buda, Texas.
