This graphic novel in te reo Maori is about Meariki, a slave who serves a chief's only daughter, Hineamuru. When Hineamuru is abducted by a warlock, Meariki and Pehi, a young warrior and Hineamuru's lover, go on a hazardous journey to rescue Hineamuru. Pehi is brave but arrogant,... while Meariki is clever and resourceful, and the journey's success rests on her. During the adventure, Pehi and Meariki uncover hidden truths, and Meariki realises that in saving Hineamuru, her own true destiny will be revealed.

Helen Pearse-Otene (Ngapuhi, Ngati Kahungunu, Rongomaiwahine, Taranaki, Ngati Ruanui) is a writer and acting tutor. She graduated from Victoria University of Wellington and Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School and has performed throughout Aotearoa and overseas with Maori theatre productions, including Waiora (by Hone Kouka), Purapurawhetu (by Briar Grace-Smith) and her own play The Battalion.
The illustrator Andrew Burdan is a freelance illustrator who has illustrated books, children's books and educational materials, including Te Po Roa, which was a Russell Clark Award finalist 2008, the graphic novel Hautipua Rererangi, which won the LIANZA Te Tohu Pounamu Award 2011 and the graphic novel Ngarimu Te Tohu Toa, which won the LIANZA Te Kura Pounamu Award 2011. He has also storyboarded on the films District 9, Aliens in the Attic, Without a Paddle, Out of the Blue and Two Little Boys.
