NZ Review This vibrant, playful introduction to Ancient Rome is a cool way to encourage children to explore ancient civilizations and develop an interest in history. It cover the role of emperors and gladiators to their invention of concrete and the calendar. The food was a little less appetizing however, cow brains o dormouse in honey anyone? the small format is highly visual an packed with cartoon-style illustrations. This entertaining series also includes Meet The Ancient Egyptians. * South Wales Evening Post * This book is just great, ideal for any young historian! I almost wish I was back in Primary School myself; a project on the Ancient Romans using a book like this would be easy. Packed full of relevant clearly written facts and information, supported by simple illustrations and humorous annotations, it makes for a great classroom resource. Written in clear comic sans font, using simple language, this book should be suitable as an independent read for most Year 3/4 children. The basic map and timeline include enough details to be relevant and informative without appearing overwhelming. The book has an easy to read contents page and each short chapter / section is clearly labelled and numbered; the addition of an index and glossary would make it even better. This book is one of a pair, the other is very similar in format and introduces the Ancient Egyptians * Reading Zone * Is your child daunted when faced with pages of text? If a visual approach to learning is preferred, then these books really hit the spot. James Davies (Author, Illustrator) James Davies is an illustrator and author from Wales, now living in Bristol. He has recently returned to illustration with a uniquely bold, graphic style, influenced by old cartoons and retro picture books and is the author and illustrator of the best-selling Meet the... series. His first picture book, Long Dog, is due out in July 2018. James's favourite food group is carbs and his worst enemy is a bald Chihuahua.
