Impressed with the spectacular size and startling features of these colossal crickets, Maori dubbed them Wetapunga, god of ugly things. Later, scientists chose the genus name Deinacrida, demon grasshopper.

So far 11 Giant species have been identified spread throughout New Zealand and since 2009 the Weta Recovery Group established by the Dept of Conservation has colllaborated with dedicated organisations, iwi and individuals to help safeguard this threatened species.

This is the second book from Annemarie Florian in this series introducing threatened species. Her book Kiwi: the real story won the Children's Choice Non-Fiction award in 2013.

Author's Bio

A longtime independent bookseller and former librarian, Annemarie Florian is a writer for younger readers. Her previous book "Kiwi: The Real Story" was teh Children's Choice Non-Fiction Winner in the 2013 New Zealand Post Children's Book Awards. Her other publications inclue "Time to Sleep" and "Books for Babies". She lives in Whangarei. Terry Fitzgibbon is an award-winning illustrator/photographer who has been engaged across the entire spectrum of graphic design and communications. He is illustrated numerous book, both for other authors and his own, and his paintings and photographs have been successfully exhibited in galleries in New Plymouth, Auckland and Whangarei. A passionate advocate for our native wildlife, he lives on a bush-clad farm on Northland's east coast.
