I was inspired by the way a car can steal the show. Think of iconic car chases in films- it's often about spectacle, and has little to do with advancing a narrative. And that's the way I think of these cars, as dead-end technologies, but also as high-performance machines which, f...or their audience, sought to reflect the spirit and attitudes of their time. -Matthew Porter Matthew Porter presents a portfolio of twenty-five images of old-school cars, captured in midair as they careen over city streets and highway intersections. Each photograph is a freeze-frame-a hypothetical film still from a pulp-fiction chase scene. The series seems, on one hand, to distill the essence of muscle-car Americana, a pop-cultural semaphore for the high-testosterone male persona. And yet, on the other, the subject-the all-American muscle car as antihero-is caught in an eternal state of suspended animation, while the various elements of the landscape in the background organize themselves around the edges of the frame. The resulting pictures are a hybrid of hyperreality and studied, topographic description, part bittersweet nostalgia and part ironic reinvention of a classic American trope.

Finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction The debut novel by New York Times bestselling author Rachel Kushner, called shimmering (The New Yorker), multilayered and absorbing (The New York Times Book Review), and gorgeously written (Kirkus Reviews).Young Everly Lederer and ...K.C. Stites come of age in Oriente Province, where the Americans tend their own fiefdom--three hundred thousand acres of United Fruit Company sugarcane that surround their gated enclave. If the rural tropics are a child's dreamworld, Everly and K.C. nevertheless have keen eyes for the indulgences and betrayals of the grown-ups around them--the mordant drinking and illicit loves, the race hierarchies and violence. In Havana, a thousand kilometers and a world away from the American colony, a cabaret dancer meets a French agitator named Christian de La Mazi re, whose seductive demeanor can't mask his shameful past. Together they become enmeshed in the brewing political underground. When Fidel and Ra l Castro lead a revolt from the mountains above the cane plantation, torching the sugar and kidnapping a boat full of yanqui revelers, K.C. and Everly begin to discover the brutality that keeps the colony humming. Though their parents remain blissfully untouched by the forces of history, the children hear the whispers of what is to come. Kushner's first novel is a tour de force, haunting and compelling, with the urgency of a telex from a forgotten time and place.

Soft Skull is reissuing Koestenbaum's first novel Moira Orfei in Aigues-Mortes with a new title, Circus A story of art and obsession pushed to the extreme, Circus received glowing critical reviews; Kirkus described it as the mad genius of Pale Fire with the florid outlaw sexualit...y of Jean Genet. Circus was extremely well-received by critics and contemporaries alike, but its arrival was under-publicized. Koestenbaum is a cult figure and a critically-acclaimed and award-winning poet, cultural critic, and novelist in the vein of Lynne Tillman, and we're excited to introduce this book with his enthusiastic reading base and beyond Soft Skull, under the editorial leadership of Yuka Igarashi, is committed to reissuing key titles from the backlist to introduce them to new readerships. An instant New York Times bestseller from two-time National Book Award finalist Rachel Kushner, The Mars Room earned tweets from Margaret Atwood-- gritty, empathic, finely rendered, no sugar toppings, and a lot of punches, none of them pulled --and from Stephen King-- The Mars Ro...om is the real deal, jarring, horrible, compassionate, funny. It's 2003 and Romy Hall, named after a German actress, is at the start of two consecutive life sentences at Stanville Women's Correctional Facility, deep in California's Central Valley. Outside is the world from which she has been severed: her young son, Jackson, and the San Francisco of her youth. Inside is a new reality: thousands of women hustling for the bare essentials needed to survive; the bluffing and pageantry and casual acts of violence by guards and prisoners alike; and the deadpan absurdities of institutional living, portrayed with great humor and precision. Stunning and unsentimental, The Mars Room is wholly authentic...profound...luminous (The Wall Street Journal), one of those books that enrage you even as they break your heart (The New York Times Book Review, cover review)--a spectacularly compelling, heart-stopping novel about a life gone off the rails in contemporary America. It is audacious and tragic, propulsive and yet beautifully refined and affirms Rachel Kushner as one of our best novelists (Entertainment Weekly).

Novela del ano segun TIME y finalista del Man Booker Prize.
