Fred was born in Waipu in Northland and left NZ in the 1960s to take up a position as gardener at Winkfield Place, a finishing school established by Constance Spry and Rosemary Hum...e to teach young women about the domestic arts. Fred moved quickly from gardener to floral decorator, utilising the Constance Spry style, arranging flowers for royalty and governments, meeting famous people and visiting their gardens around the world.
