On the reconstitution of a body, death, translation, and editing This first monograph on artist and filmmaker Nicole Miller focuses on a single sculpture by the artist: Michael in Black (2018). This book brings together a cohort of writers and other artists through newly commissi...oned texts and works for the page, as well as republished texts and images that exist as their own whole. Some texts hinge on the sculpture, others are tangents. The book's texts and images build on each other, functioning as a prism for the publication's subject. Michael in Black (2018) is a bronze cast of Michael Jackson's kneeling figure, poured from a mold made directly from his body around 1986. This talismanic object comprises myriad aspects of celebrity and image: the objecthood of the performer, the potency and perversity of objects, death, and grief. This sculpture is an outlier in Miller's work, though it excavates some concerns she has similarly articulated in moving image: her recurring interest in the self-performance of her film subjects; the dehumanizing effects of the mass gaze; the celebrity as a host object for contemporary projections; the tactility of film, the sculptural qualities of editing; and the potential for self-storytelling to reconstitute an individual's wholeness.

Short Stories for the (Urban) Soul is a compilation of ten short stories and novellas that depict a modern take on spirituality in African American culture. Written for adults and young adults, the compilation presents male and female characters whose identities intertwine with f...ashion, music, urban vernacular, and, in many cases, a non-traditional faith. In many of the stories the main character is presented with a challenge that tests their faith and overcomes, usually with the assistance of others. The reader will see how these characters navigate typical life circumstances such as heartbreak, abuse, friendships, social justice issues and more. In Short Stories for the (Urban) Soul, Vanessa is a college student who has a strong family background and great sense of self, but finds herself the victim of an abusive relationship. A friend's spirituality is a great influence in helping her break free. In Short Stories for the (Urban) Soul, Calvin faces betrayal from Monica when finding out she cheated on him with his best friend, but his faith helps him to give her another chance. In Short Stories for the (Urban) Soul, Tyrone experiences trauma when his friend and fellow student is murdered while running in his own neighborhood during their college fall break, but this experience helps him realize his own calling in social justice for the Black community. These stories will resonate with many African Americans who are evolving in their spirituality and will provide a pathway for young Black men and women to navigate questions of faith and community.
