The artist John Z. Robinson has recently released a new book entitled J Z Robinson. New Paintings to coincide with his exhibition at the TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre in Auckland. The book presents a survey of his paintings over a 35 year period. Dunedin artist John Z Robinso...n has maintained parallel careers in jewellery, printmaking, painting and sculpture. In each of these disciplines he has evolved a separate signature identity. John Z. Robinson: Paintings presents this multi-talented artist in his guise as a painter. In this role Robinson is an exuberant colourist who rejoices in expressive brush strokes and bold splashes of pigment, equally at home with pure abstraction and representational subjects including portrait and figure studies. Ironically as a print-maker Robinsons work is much more tightly controlled, and is strongly linked to his practice as a designer and creator of fine works in precious metals. Born in Foxton in 1953, John Robinson completed a formal jewellery apprenticeship with a Palmerston North manufacturing jeweller, before moving to Dunedin in 1978. He subsequently studied at Otago Polytechnic School of Art, completing an Honours degree in Fine Art in 1996. He was the William Hodges Fellow at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery in 1998. Prolific in a variety of media, he has exhibited continuously since 1980, building an international reputation for his fine jewellery through exhibitions in Japan, Australia, the US and Europe, while simultaneously making and showing paintings and prints in numerous solo exhibitions in Dunedin. He is especially well-known for his many design commissions for theatre sets and book covers. His works are held in many public and private collections.

The just-published 176 page 'The Male Figure in the Art of John Z. Robinson' by Brent Coutts, Peter Graczer, and Malcolm Templeton is a well-produced, retrospective look at the life and work of the Dunedin painter - as seen through his paintings and sketches of male nudes. The b...ook is copiously and beautifully illustrated. It draws on Robinsons works from the early 1980s to the present day and is an attempt to explain just where Robinson has come from and where, perhaps, he is going. Homosexuality is central to Robinson's work - or at least these particular works. The leading essay by Brent Coutts unearths Robinson's gay history in terms of his depiction of the male nude.
