The multiplicity of tourism encounters provide some of the best available occasions to observe the social world and its making(s). Focusing on ontological politics of tourism development, this book examines how different versions of tourism are enacted, how encounters between dif...ferent versions of tourism orderings may result in controversies, but also on how these enactments and encounters are entangled in multiple ways to broader areas of development, conservation, policy and destination management. Throughout the book, encounters and controversies are investigated from a poststructuralist and relational approach as complex and emerging, seeing the roles and characteristics of related actors as co-constituted. Inspired by post-actor-network theory and related research, the studies include the social as well as the material, but also multiplicity and ontological politics when examining controversial matters or events.

Actor-network theory (ANT) is among the approaches to have emerged of late in the field of tourism correlated to an interest in the understanding of the tourism phenomena as a complex system of relational practices connecting cultures, natures and technologies in multifarious way...s. Despite the widespread application of ANT across the social sciences no book has dealt with the practical and theoretical implications of using ANT in Tourism research. This is the first book to critically engage with the application of actor-network theory (ANT) in tourism studies. By doing so it challenges approaches that have dominated the literature for the last 20 yrs and casts new light on issues of materiality, ordering and networks in Tourism. It further aims to aid understanding about the approach, its possibilities and limitations as an ontology and research methodology as well as advance its use and research in the field of tourism. The book is divided in two parts. Part 1 introduces ANT and its key conceptual premises and consists of 3 chapters which introduce the book, ANT and the relation between ANT and tourism studies. Part 2 deals with specific subject areas and shows how ANT contributes to tourism studies. This part presents examples and cases which illustrate the use of the approach in a critical way. Inherently the study of tourism is a multi-disciplinary field of research and that is reflected in the diverse academic backgrounds of the contributing authors to provide a broad post-disciplinary context of ANT in Tourism studies. This unique book focusing on emerging approaches in tourism research will be of value to students, researchers and academics in Tourism as well as the wider Social Sciences.

This book addresses the production of knowledge and performances of collaboration in tourism. It bridges the gap between theory and the lived realities of tourism development, tourism management, and the creation and implementation of tourism-related policies. The book draws on p...articular theoretical and methodological perspectives that situate academic tourism studies not as an ex post facto critique of tourism practices, but as a partner in the production of knowledge through and about tourism, and in the enactment of future tourism. It is structured to offer, on the one hand, an introduction to the ontological basis behind collaborative research, and on the other hand, a set of empirical models for how collaborative knowledge creation can inform tourism design, management, and policy.

Co-creation has become a buzzword in many social science disciplines, in business and in tourism studies. Given the prominence of co-creation, surprisingly little discussion has evolved around its implications for research practices and knowledge production as well as what challe...nges there are for fulfilling the promise of co-creation in tourism research. This book aims to contribute to this discussion by addressing how tourism research comes together as a collaborative achievement and by exploring different ways of collaborative knowledge production in tourism research. It is structured to offer, on one hand, an introduction to the ontological basis for collaborative research and, on the other hand, a set of empirical examples of how collaborative knowledge creation can inform tourism design, management, policy and education. The theoretical accounts and empirical cases of this book display how research collaborations can offer modest, local yet often impactful insights, traces and effects. It therefore will be of value for students, researchers and academics in tourism studies as well as the wider social sciences.

Tourism research that is inspired by theories of practice is currently gaining in prominence. This book provides a much-needed introduction to the potential applications of theories of practice in tourism studies. It brings together a variety of approaches exploring how theories ...of practice bridge themes and fields which are usually addressed separately within tourism research: consumption and production; travel and the everyday; governance and policy; technology and the social. The book critically engages with practices as a fruitful approach to tourism research as well as how the particularities of tourism might inform our understanding of practice theories. This book contributes to conceptual and methodological debates providing insights from authors who have engaged with practice theory as an entry point to researching tourism. It offers a solid starting point for researchers and students alike who wish to learn about, and try, this approach, as well as explore its possibilities and limitations in the field of tourism.
