This book presents a fresh approach to the question of the historical continuities and discontinuities of Jew-hatred, juxtaposing chapters dealing with the same phenomenon - one in the pre-modern, one in the modern period. How do the circumstances of interreligious violence diffe...r in pre-Reformation Europe, the modern Muslim world, and the modern Western world? In addition to the diachronic comparison, most chapters deal with the significance of religion for the formation of anti-Jewish stereotypes. The direct dialogue of small-scale studies bridging the chronological gap brings out important nuances: anti-Zionist texts appropriating medieval ritual murder accusations; modern-day pogroms triggered by contemporary events but fuelled by medieval prejudices; and contemporary stickers drawing upon long-inherited knowledge about what a Jew looks like. These interconnections, however, differ from the often-assumed straightforward continuities between medieval and modern anti-Jewish hatred. The book brings together many of the most distinguished scholars of this field, creating a unique dialogue between historical periods and academic disciplines.

This book explores the complexity of preaching as a phenomenon in the medieval Jewish-Christian encounter. This was not only an encounter as physical meeting or confrontation (such as the forced attendance of Jews at Christian sermons that took place across Europe), but also an i...maginary or theological encounter in which Jews remained a figure from a distant constructed time and place who served only to underline and verify Christian teachings. Contributors also explore the Jewish response to Christian anti-Jewish preaching in their own preaching and religious instruction.

In The Future of the Wild, conservationist Jonathan S. Adams mixes fascinating case studies of species and landscapes with conservation science and history to explain why it's time to think big. Only by saving large tracts of land and the wildlife corridors that connect them can ...we hope to save the widest variety of species in any ecosystem. And only by saving whole ecosystems, including human communities, can we hope to make significant strides in conservation. An engaging, well-written book with a real feel for wildlife, wild places and the fascinating cast of characters--scientists, environmentalists and ranchers--whose idealism and dedication are contributing to a radically different kind of conservation. --Paul Evans, BBC Wildlife Jonathan Adams lays out a bold road map for how to bind together the scattered remnants of this continent's wild places--and for knitting up the mingled fates of the wild and human communities that inhabit them, envisioning a better, more sustainable future for both. --Scott Weidensaul, author of Return to Wild America Adams profiles ecologists and activists, as well as grassroots and national conservation organizations, in a seamless flow of readable prose to make his point that sustainable human activity and sustainable populations of wildlife must not be mutually exclusive. --Ted Levin, OnEarth Jonathan S. Adams is a conservation biologist, writer, and program director with The Nature Conservancy. He is the coauthor of The Myth of Wild Africa: Conservation Without Illusion and the coeditor of Precious Heritage: The Status of Biodiversity in the United States. He lives with his wife and two children in the Maryland suburbs ofWashington, D.C.

The Heart Rules the Night is not just another predictably redundant romance novel. Rev. Kyle Campbell, feels himself being sucked into the darkness of an emotional abyss. Standing at the rim is one lone glimmer of light - Kari. She is from a different continent - a different cult...ure - decades younger. Any relationship between Kyle and Kari would be impossible - culturally reprehensible; however, Kyle and Kari's world, from the moment their eyes meet, is a world of its own. Their world forms as characters from beyond the veil pull them, push them together. A past-lives sister, Aidan, warns Kyle of the certain disaster, She will hurt you. She always has. She always will. Still, there is no denying a love which crosses all boundaries of time and space to bring them into one another's arms. Kyle is in a decades-long celibate marriage to a person who has ceased to acknowledge his being. Kari had bound herself to a soldier years earlier to escape a culture which treats women as chattel. Kyle has finished his last goal of successfully helping his children complete university. Kari's husband has now become dangerously abusive with each return from long deployments. She abhors the thought of his fathering any children she might have. Beneath an ever-darkening shadow, Kyle fills the hours in his life with myriad church and civic organizations. His acquaintances see him only as the take-charge organizer who always gives 100%. Inwardly isolated, Kyle searches for an acceptable end. Alone, friendless and threatened by her husband's military pals, Kari fills her days with long Skype conversations with her parents a world away, then dreads the daily 2:00 a.m. calls to his overseas base her husband demands. She sees no acceptable escape. The Heart Rules the Night is a rare and revealing romance written from a male's perspective. The depth of feeling which often hides beneath the more puerile pursuits of men is exposed. Women readers will often discover
