At the tender age of seventeen, naturalist Georg Forster (1754-94) embarked with the famous Captain James Cook on a voyage around the world. During the trip, Forster explored recently discovered regions, including New Zealand, New Caledonia, Tahiti, and Tonga. Shortly after his r...eturn in 1775, Forster met in London with Prince Franz and Princess Louise of Anhalt-Dessau. There, Forster presented them with numerous Polynesian objects, which returned with the royal couple to the German town of W rlitz. Today, amid resurgent interest in Forster and his work, those items, now known as the South Seas collection, are available to the public as part of Germany's first permanent Forster exhibition. Brimming with full-color images, Georg Forster is the catalog for the exhibition, which is housed in the palace of the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-W rlitz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This book bursts to life with photographs, historic paintings, and drawings, as well as lively quotations by Forster and his contemporaries. From the grass skirt of a Tahitian dancer to maces from Tonga to an axe of jade-green nephrite from New Zealand, Georg Forster provides new perspectives on these priceless artifacts and vividly brings back to life Forster and Cook's momentous voyage.

For over 50 years between the 1760s and the early 19th century, the pioneers who sailed from Europe to explore the Pacific brought back glimpses of this new world in the form of oil paintings, watercolours and drawings - a sensational view of a part of the world few would ever se...e. Today these works represent a fascinating and inspiring perspective from the frontier of discovery. It was Sir Joseph Banks, President of the Royal Society, who popularised the placement of professional artists on British ships of exploration. They captured striking and memorable images of everything they encountered: exotic landscapes, beautiful flora and fauna, as well as remarkable portraits of indigenous peoples. These earliest views of the Pacific, particularly Australia, were designed to promote the new world as enticing, to make it seem familiar, to encourage further exploration and, ultimately, British settlement. Drawing on both private and public collections from around the world, this lavish book collects together oil paintings, watercolours, drawings, prints and other documents from those voyages, and presents a unique glimpse into an age where science and art became irrevocably entwined.

Cloves and nutmeg are indigenous to the Spice Islands of Eastern Indonesia. The book tells of the many uses of these exotic spices and the history of their trade over a period of more than 2000 years. It describes how the Spice trade into Europe came to be dominated by Middle Eas...tern and Venetian merchants. Backed by the Crowns of Portugal and Spain explorers such as Columbus, Vasco da Gama and Magellan dreamt of sailing directly to the Spice Islands. Much of the story is told through the lives of these historical characters, as well as Sir Francis Drake, Jan Pieterzoom Coen, Pierre Poive and others, lesser known but equally important. The story revolves around the intense rivalry between the Sultans of Ternate and Tidore, their relationship with the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and English who at different times occupied the Spice Islands.

The first four volumes of this highly acclaimed Encyclopedia dealt almost exclusively with voyages and travels of indisputable historical reality. In this intriguing final volume the author turns his attention to the curious but compelling alternative literature of exploration; t...o imaginary, apocryphal and utopian journeys in fabulous lands; and to the abundance of invented, plagiarized and spoof narratives, many of which were accepted in their time as wholly credible but were nothing more than flights of the imagination, blatant deceptions, or monologues of doubtful authenticity.
