The Mahavidyas are the representative Tantric feminine pantheon consisting of ten goddesses. It is formed by divergent religious strands and elements: the matr and yogini worship, the cult of Kali and Tripurasundari, Vajrayana Buddhism, Jain Vidyadevis, Saiva and Vaisnava faith, ...Srividya, the Brahmanical strand of Puranic traditions, etc. This volume is the first attempt to explore the historical process, through which these traditions culminated in the Mahavidya cult and the goddesses with different origins and contradictory attributes were brought into a cluster, with special reference to socio-political changes in the lower Ganga and Brahmaputra Valley between the 9th and 15th centuries CE. Based on a close analysis of Puranas, Tantras and inscriptional evidence, and on extensive field research on archaeological remains as well as sacred sites, Jae-Eun Shin discusses the two trajectories of the Mahavidyas in eastern Sakta traditions. Each led to the systematization of Dasamahavidyas in a specific way: one, as ten manifestations of Durga upholding dharma in the cosmic dimension, and the other, as ten mandalic goddesses bearing magical powers in the actual sacred site. Their attributes and characteristics have neither been static nor monolithic, and the mode of worship prescribed for them has changed in a dialectical religious process between Brahmanical and Tantric traditions of the region. This is the definitive work for anyone seeking to understand goddess cults of South Asia in general and the history of eastern Sakta traditions in particular. To aid study, the volume includes images, diagrams and maps. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Based on the EU-funded CORASON research project, this volume brings together and compares studies into rural and sustainable development processes in 12 European countries. In doing so, it identifies key trends and reveals the changing nature of development processes on the way t...owards a knowledge society. The book examines the differences between the preconditions and contexts relevant to rural development strategies and those relevant to sustainable development strategies. It explores whether the concept, goals and nature of rural development is better understood and adopted by rural actors than those of sustainable development. Finally by focusing on the ideas and practices of sustainable resource management- a component in both rural and sustainable development objectives- it links with knowledge used by actors involved in rural development.

This handbook provides a conceptual discussion of change management and an overview of organizational change in Africa. Additionally, it addresses issues of international concern and comparative aspects of organizational change management. A defining feature of the extensive disc...ourse on organizational change is its predominant focus on change efforts of organizations in the West. Over the past two decades or so, the previously underperforming economies of sub-Saharan Africa have been experiencing a form of economic renaissance with some of these countries averaging annual growth rates in the region of 6%. Indeed, so impressive has the performance of these economies been that this development is said to herald the emergence of the continent as a pole of global growth. Among the imperatives for this economic transformation is the ability of African organizations to ride the storm of change. While globalization has created opportunities for organizations in Africa, they face the challenge of effectively exploiting these opportunities in order to survive and grow. This handbook aims to address the gap in the change management literature in Africa and provide an actionable knowledge base that organizations may draw on to effectively manage change. The handbook aims to address among others such issues as: What are the external and internal pressures for change? How do organizations discern these pressures? What is the content and process of change? What role do leaders play in the change management process? How do they address resistance to change? How do organizations build an internal change management capability? How do they assess the effectiveness of change management efforts? Taken together, these issues are underpinned by the realization that organizational survival in an increasingly dynamic environment is contingent upon their agility and adaptability. This handbook contributes to the literature by adopting a contextual, historical, processual, and strategic ori

Gangs and militias have been a persistent feature of social and political life in Indonesia. During the authoritarian New Order regime they constituted part of a vast network of sub-contracted coercion and social control on behalf of the state. Indonesia's subsequent democratisat...ion has seen gangs adapt to and take advantage of the changed political context. New types of populist street based organisations have emerged that combine predatory rent-seeking with claims of representing marginalised social and economic groups. Based on extensive fieldwork in Jakarta this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the changing relationship between gangs, militias and political power and authority in post-New Order Indonesia. It argues that gangs and militias have manufactured various types of legitimacy in consolidating localised territorial monopolies and protection economies. As mediators between the informal politics of the street and the world of formal politics they have become often influential brokers in Indonesia's decentralised electoral democracy. More than mere criminal extortion, it is argued that the protection racket as a social relation of coercion and domination remains a salient feature of Indonesia's post-authoritarian political landscape. This ground-breaking study will be of interest to students and scholars of Indonesian and Southeast Asian politics, political violence, gangs and urban politics.

This book offers a novel analysis of Arctic postage stamps and their representations of Arctic sovereignty in the United States, Canada and Russia. It explores how these countries have absorbed Arctic territory into their national consciousness through the symbolic imagery of pos...tage stamps, examining how the choice of, and use of, symbols and images on stamps tells a story of how these countries have presented their Arctic frontiers, colonies, and peripheries. This book argues that the performance of policy in these regions has caused relative sovereignty to become a reality. It provides an intriguing account of how these countries have, in their distinctive ways, established or reinforced their political power in these regions.

This book, originally published in 1966, deals mainly with morphemes and with grammatical and syntactic behaviour. Although some vocabulary material is contained in this volume, and some more in the Linguistic Survey of the Northern Bantu Borderland, vocabulary comparison itself ...plays little part. The volume presents an overall picture of the working of representative languages from each section of the Handbook and provides grammatical material which will help future students in classifying the languages to their typological as apart from their lexical features.

This book brings together contributors across the disciplines to examine the local, national, regional and global processes that have shaped Maghribi societies, economies and politics since the colonial period. Focusing equally on the local shape of global processes and on the br...oader significance of particular 'ways of doing things', these studies move beyond generalisations about globalisation and its impact on local societies, whether developmental or detrimental, of the 'global in the local', or of 'glocalisation'. Cases range from the onset of the 'first wave' of globalisation in the colonial era to the most recent developments in identity politics, consumerism, and telecommunications. Contributors show how nationalising and globalising influences are seized, remade, and put to work in very different ways by High Atlas farmers or urban real estate speculators, human rights activists at the edge of the Sahara and amateur theatre actors in Mediterranean towns. Always located somewhere, these social actors nonetheless act in different ways, with different effects, at different levels of engagement, whether with each other, their own governments, or the wider world. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of North African Studies.
