            The Money Miners (EPUB ebook)

            By Sykes, Trevor

In The Money Miners, Trevor Sykes writes of how and why mining shares rose and fell so dramatically at the end of 1969, and traces the scandals and collapse of many companies in the wildest stock market boom Australia has ever seen. Ultimately, this is a story of greed, a story o...f those who were more interested in mining money rather than minerals.

South Korea known as the hermit kingdom was wrenched from its isolation in the mid-seventies with the forced industialisation of its economy by Park Chung-hee during his dictatorial regime. This led South Korea to becoming the most rapidly industialised country in the world with ...world class technology and a population who are largely digitally proficient. The course is charted from the rule of Park Chung-hee to his democratically elected daughter President Park Geun-hye who is now on trial for corruption. The legacy of the Park to Park era is not only the most fruitful in Korean history but the most tumultuous, most recently because of the accelerated nuclear ambitions of North Korea. The analysis is through the framework of investment, innovation and intellectual property rights and the double edged sword of cult and rapid action, so central to Korean culture.

Since the publication of Bonds & Bond Derivatives in 2005 by Blackwell, the now infamous financial crisis caused a major shift in credit markets, ushering in a greater interest in fixed income securities and institutions. In its latest incarnation, Fixed Income Securities goes be...yond merely describing the mechanics of financial instruments. It incorporates the causes and consequences of the financial debt crisis giving students a historical perspective on the development of markets and the impact of regulation on these markets. The new book examines changes in the mortgage market, the growth of new financial instruments such as credit default swaps, the changing roles of central banks and treasuries in light of the debt crisis, the growth of over-the-counter derivatives markets, and the `shadow banking system'. There is also a new chapter on term structure models, and separate chapters on central banking and on other financial institutions, including hedge funds and sovereign funds. Other features include: Coverage of markets outside of the US, broadening the book's international appeal A chapter on the Great Recession, providing students with context to understand the development of financial markets and the impact of regulation Expanded coverage of banking regulation; interest rates; bonds, options and swaps; and mortgages Theory and concepts are covered thoroughly without unnecessary complexity and detail Simple and intuitive examples that successfully tie in to real world practice Presenting the material in a clear and concise manner, Fixed Income Securities provides graduate level students with an accessible, updated alternative to traditional tomes on this subject.

Absent evidence to the contrary, it is usually assumed that US financial markets developed in spite of government attempts to regulate, and therefore laissez faire is the best approach for developing critically important and enduring market institutions. This book makes heavy use... of extensive archival sources that are no longer publicly available to describe in detail the discussions inside the CBOT and the often private and confidential negotiations between industry leaders and government officials. This work suggests that, contrary to the accepted story, what we now know of as modern futures markets were heavily co-constructed through a meaningful long-term collaboration between a progressive CBOT leadership and an extremely knowledgeable and pragmatic US federal government. The industry leaders had a difficult time evolving the modern institutions in the face of powerful reactionary internal forces. Yet in the end the CBOT, by co-opting and cooperating with federal officials, led the exchange and Chicago markets in general to a near century of global dominance. On the federal government side, knowledgeable technocrats and inspired politicians led an information and analysis explosion while interacting with industry, both formally and informally, to craft better markets for all.
