Dignity is a fundamental aspect of our lives, yet one we rarely pause to consider; our understandings of dignity, on individual, collective and philosophical perspectives, shape how we think, act and relate to others. This book offers an historical survey of how dignity has been ...understood and explores the concept in the Judaeo-Christian tradition. World-renowned contributors examine the roots of human dignity in classical Greece and Rome and the Scriptures, as well as in the work of theologians, such as St Thomas Aquinas and St John Paul II. Further chapters consider dignity within Renaissance art and sacred music. The volume shows that dignity is also a contemporary issue by analysing situations where the traditional understanding has been challenged by philosophical and policy developments. To this end, further essays look at the role of dignity in discussions about transhumanism, religious freedom, robotics and medicine. Grounded in the principal Christian traditions of Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Anglicanism, and Protestantism, this book offers an interdisciplinary and cross-period approach to a timely topic. It validates the notion of human dignity and offers an introduction to the field, while also challenging it.

Exercises in opposites reconciliation is a means of bringing to awareness the unity of the opposites of being, revealing the third part, the neutronic core of being, which becomes a threefold reconciliation of one's threefold being within the Consciousness of God. We are led to r...ealize that the three parts of being are interchangeable parts of the same thing. Inasmuch as it is not an easy thing to bring awareness the nature of one's being as it is created within the Consciousness of God, there are lots of repetitions in the exercises within this book. It is the Christ Self of one's being in God that reconciles the opposites of being within the Kingdom of god and delivers the Kingdom unto God that God may be realized to be the all in all within all. Accordingly, the reconciliation of all things unto God is the reconciliation of any and all seeming opposites that come to mind. It is a matter of losing and finding every part of an opposites hidden within its counterpart. Thus life and death are one in the other and there revealed. Life is revealed, yet hidden in death, and death is revealed, yet hidden in life. Life and death are inseparable parts of the same thing. Such is why one must lose life in order to find it. We come to realize that we must embrace both sides of an opposite, not just one ore the other. A life that denies its counterpart, death, is a life in part. Hearing that denies its counterpart, deafness, is hearing in part. Seeing that denies its counterpart, blindness, is seeing in part. Such is what the scriptures, both the Old and the New Testament, are ever seeking to reveal. The nature of the revelation of this insight is such that it may appear as a new revelation. However, when one becomes aware of this seemingly new revelation, one come to realize that it is a part of an everlasting message that is without beginning or end. What is new for the time is the doing away with the part, reconciling it with the whole, in order to see what is in transonic

This book offers a rigorous analysis of why commitment matters and the challenges it presents to a range of believers. Peter Forrest treats commitment as a response to lost innocence. He considers the intellectual consequences of this by demonstrating why, for example, we should ...not believe in angels. He then explores why humans are attached to reason and to humanism, recognising the different commitments made by theist and non-theist humanists. Finally, he analyses religious faith, specifically fideism, defining it by way of contrast to Descartes, Pascal and William James, as well as contemporary philosophers including John Schellenberg and Lara Buchak. Of particular interest to scholars working on the philosophy of religion, the book makes the case both for and against committing to God, recognising that God's divine character sets up an emotional rather than an intellectual barrier to commitment to worship.

Of all the topics in the history of philosophy the history of different forms of thinking and contemplation is one of the most important, and yet it is also relatively overlooked. What is it to think philosophically? How did different forms of thinking - reflection, contemplation..., critique and analysis - emerge in different epochs? This collection offers a rich and diverse philosophical exploration of the history of contemplation, from the classical period to the twenty-first century. It covers canonical figures including Plato, Aristotle, Descartes and Kant, as well as debates in less well-known areas such as classical Indian and Islamic thought and the role of speculation in twentieth-century Russian philosophy. Comprising twenty-two chapters by an international team of contributors, the volume is divided into five parts: Flourishing and Thinking from Homer to Hume The Thinking of Thinking from Augustine to Goedel Images and Thinking from Plotinus to Unger Bodies of Thought and Habits of Thinking from Plato to Irigaray The Efficacy of Thinking from Sextus to Bataille. Thought: A Philosophical History is the first comprehensive investigation of the history of philosophical thought and contemplation. As such it is a landmark publication for anyone researching and teaching the history of philosophy, and a valuable resource for those studying the subject in related fields such as literature, religion, sociology and the history of ideas.

Does humanity possess the freedom to think and act, or are we always caused and determined to think and act--exactly how we think and act--by things outside of our control? If we are always causally determined to think and act by things outside of our control, then how can humans... be genuinely responsible for any of our thoughts or following actions? However, if humanity is genuinely free and responsible for at least some of our thoughts and actions, then how can the Christian rationally affirm the doctrine that God is totally sovereign and predestines all things? In Human Freedom, Divine Knowledge, and Mere Molinism, Timothy A. Stratton surveys the history of theological thought from Augustine to Edwards and reaches surprising historical conclusions supporting what he refers to as limited libertarian freedom. Stratton goes further to offer multiple arguments appealing to Scripture, theology, and philosophy that each conclude humanity does, in fact, possess libertarian freedom. He then appeals to the work of Luis de Molina and offers unique arguments concluding that God possesses middle knowledge. If this is the case, then God can be completely sovereign and predestine all things without violating human freedom and responsibility.
