In THE TWO VOLUMES of Prosodic Syntax in Chinese, the author develops a new model which proposes that the interaction between syntax and prosody is bi-directional and that prosody can not only constrains syntactic structures, but also activates syntactic operations. All of the fa...cts investigated in Chinese provide new perspectives for linguistic theories as well as the insights into the nature of human languages. The subtitles of the two volumes are Theory and Facts and History and Change respectively, with each focusing on different topics (though each volume has both theoretical and (historical) descriptive concerns).

One of the characteristics of folk tales, i.e., stories that are popular among the common people, sometimes termed legends , is that there is no standard script. The plot and theme of a single story constantly change with respect to differences in time, place, locale, and peoples...' customs. Moreover, folk tales were transmitted orally, which is one of the more important reasons why they change so easily. , , ) , , The histories of early China always include many legends and stories. Not until the period of the Six Dynasties period were there literati who specialized in compiling and revising legends or folk tales. This tradition has continued to this day. , , , , , , , , Of all those who compiled and anthologized stories and legends from ancient sources, the most successful was Wang Ying of the Ming Dynasty. He edited Stories from Various Books, the sources of which are extremely rich and varied. The folk tales in The Overseas Chinese Library are culled from books of this kind and are rewritten in modern Chinese. , Folk tales contain within them the dreams and wishes of a people. If we desire to understand ourselves a little better, we should not neglect to read them.

These volumes represent the highest level of scholarship on what is arguably the most important tradition of Biblical Hebrew. Written by the leading scholar of the Tiberian Masoretic tradition, they offer a wealth of new data and revised analysis, and constitute a considerable ad...vance on existing published scholarship. It should stand alongside Israel Yeivin's 'The Tiberian Masorah' as an essential handbook for scholars of Biblical Hebrew, and will remain an indispensable reference work for decades to come.-Dr. Benjamin Outhwaite, Director of the Taylor-Schechter Genizah Research Unit, Cambridge University LibraryThe form of Biblical Hebrew that is presented in printed editions, with vocalization and accent signs, has its origin in medieval manuscripts of the Bible. The vocalization and accent signs are notation systems that were created in Tiberias in the early Islamic period by scholars known as the Tiberian Masoretes, but the oral tradition they represent has roots in antiquity. The grammatical textbooks and reference grammars of Biblical Hebrew in use today are heirs to centuries of tradition of grammatical works on Biblical Hebrew in Europe. The paradox is that this European tradition of Biblical Hebrew grammar did not have direct access to the way the Tiberian Masoretes were pronouncing Biblical Hebrew. In the last few decades, research of manuscript sources from the medieval Middle East has made it possible to reconstruct with considerable accuracy the pronunciation of the Tiberian Masoretes, which has come to be known as the 'Tiberian pronunciation tradition'. This book presents the current state of knowledge of the Tiberian pronunciation tradition of Biblical Hebrew and a full edition of one of the key medieval sources, Hidayat al-Qari' 'The Guide for the Reader', by 'Abu al-Faraj Harun. It is hoped that the book will help to break the mould of current grammatical descriptions of Biblical Hebrew and form a bridge between modern traditions of grammar and the

The present work is a study of the Astadhyayi of Panini from a new perspective. It attempts to explore the Paninian system of Sanskrit grammar from a formal point of view and investigate the possibilities of representing it in a logical, explicit and consistent manner. It puts fo...rward an appropriate framework for such a representation. Differing from the formulation of Astadhyayi, which is composed in an artificial yet natural language and is meant to be employed by individuals who are acquainted both with the Sanskrit language and the techniques of grammar, the present rendering aims for a non-verbal representation in terms of mathematical categories and logical relations which can be implemented in an algorithmic manner. The formal framework suggested in this work would facilitate adequate tools for postulating and evaluating hypotheses about the grammatical system. Moreover, it would furnish the basis for a computer implementation of the grammar. Both these aspects are objects of enquiry in the field of theoretical studies on Panini as well as the emerging discipline of Sanskrit computational linguistics. This book takes on the ground-work in these areas. This work was published by Saint Philip Street Press pursuant to a Creative Commons license permitting commercial use.
