This is a textbook for an introductory course in analysis, combining topics from a transition course. At some schools, a transition course is combined over one or two semesters to introduce topics from real analysis. This allows students a more gradual approach to the difficult t...opics of analysis. Beginning with logic and sets, this text gradually raises the sophistication level of students coming out of calculus and proceeds into analysis topics.

Proof theory, particularly sequent calculi, allows you to provide completely formal proofs of theorems and facilitate reasoning about proofs. However, sequent calculi are not widely taught to students at either the undergraduate or graduate levels. Remedying this deficiency, this... book provides a comprehensive introduction to sequent calculi. It incorporates new developments in the theory of sequent calculi from the last few decades, including recent results on consecution calculi and proof systems.

Applicable to any problem that requires a finite number of solutions, finite state-based models (also called finite state machines or finite state automata) have found wide use in various areas of computer science and engineering. Handbook of Finite State Based Models and Applica...tions provides a complete collection of introductory materials on finite state theories, algorithms, and the latest domain applications. For beginners, the book is a handy reference for quickly looking up model details. For more experienced researchers, it is suitable as a source of in-depth study in this area. The book first introduces the fundamentals of automata theory, including regular expressions, as well as widely used automata, such as transducers, tree automata, quantum automata, and timed automata. It then presents algorithms for the minimization and incremental construction of finite automata and describes Esterel, an automata-based synchronous programming language for embedded system software development. Moving on to applications, the book explores regular path queries on graph-structured data, timed automata in model checking security protocols, pattern matching, compiler design, and XML processing. It also covers other finite state-based modeling approaches and applications, including Petri nets, statecharts, temporal logic, and UML state machine diagrams.

            Einstein Was Right!

All modern books on Einstein emphasize the genius of his relativity theory and the corresponding corrections and extensions of the ancient space-time concept. However, Einstein's opposition to the use of probability in the laws of nature and particularly in the laws of quantum me...chanics is criticized and often portrayed as outdated. The author of Einstein Was Right! takes a different view and shows that Einstein created a Trojan horse ready to unleash forces against the use of probability as a basis for the laws of nature. Einstein warned that the use of probability would, in the final analysis, lead to spooky actions and mysterious instantaneous influences at a distance. John Bell pulled Einstein's Trojan horse into the castle of physics. He developed a theory that, together with experimental results of Aspect, Zeilinger, and others, proves the existence of quantum non-localities, instantaneous influences. These have indeed the nature of what Einstein labeled as spooky. The book Einstein Was Right! shows that Bell was not aware of the special role that time and space-time play in any rigorous probability theory. As a consequence, his formalism is not general enough to be applied to the Aspect-Zeilinger type of experiments and his conclusions about the existence of instantaneous influences at a distance are incorrect. This fact suggests a world view that is less optimistic about claims that teleportation and influences at a distance could open new horizons and provide the possibility of quantum computing. On the positive side, however, and as compensation, we are assured that the space-time picture of mankind developed over millions of years and perfected by Einstein, is still able to cope with the phenomena that nature presents us on the atomic and sub-atomic level and that the quantum weirdness may be explainable and understandable after all.

Many people know that Java forms the background and functionality of the MatLab(R) software package, but fewer people know how to manipulate Java to achieve improved appearance and performance and thus heighten MatLab software's applicability to real world, modern situations. Org...anized by related functionality/usage and ordered from facile to complex, this book presents examples, instruction, and code snippets in stand-alone, self-contained chapters. Requiring no prior Java knowledge, this book provides numerous online references and resources to show readers how to use and discover new components and applications using nothing but MatLab as the discovery tool.
