Point-set topology, important in itself as a research discipline, underpins a wide range of mathematical areas and is consequently taught as a component of many university mathematics degree programmes. This textbook offers an accessible, modern introduction, with a particular fo...cus on helping students to build theory for themselves.

            The Geometry of Multivariate Statistics

A traditional approach to developing multivariate statistical theory is algebraic. Sets of observations are represented by matrices, linear combinations are formed from these matrices by multiplying them by coefficient matrices, and useful statistics are found by imposing various... criteria of optimization on these combinations. Matrix algebra is the vehicle for these calculations. A second approach is computational. Since many users find that they do not need to know the mathematical basis of the techniques as long as they have a way to transform data into results, the computation can be done by a package of computer programs that somebody else has written. An approach from this perspective emphasizes how the computer packages are used, and is usually coupled with rules that allow one to extract the most important numbers from the output and interpret them. Useful as both approaches are--particularly when combined--they can overlook an important aspect of multivariate analysis. To apply it correctly, one needs a way to conceptualize the multivariate relationships that exist among variables. This book is designed to help the reader develop a way of thinking about multivariate statistics, as well as to understand in a broader and more intuitive sense what the procedures do and how their results are interpreted. Presenting important procedures of multivariate statistical theory geometrically, the author hopes that this emphasis on the geometry will give the reader a coherent picture into which all the multivariate techniques fit.

This monograph on the applications of cube complexes constitutes a breakthrough in the fields of geometric group theory and 3-manifold topology. The work weaves together essentials of Gromov's hyperbolic groups with the theory of cube complexes dual to spaces with walls. Many fun...damental new ideas and methodologies are presented here for the first time, including a cubical small-cancellation theory generalizing ideas from the 1960s, a version of Dehn Filling that functions in the category of special cube complexes, and a variety of results about right-angled Artin groups. The book culminates by establishing a remarkable theorem about the nature of hyperbolic groups that are constructible as amalgams: they are commensurable with subgroups of right-angled Artin groups. The applications described here include the virtual fibering of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds and the resolution of Baumslag's conjecture on the residual finiteness of one-relator groups with torsion. Most importantly, this work establishes a cubical program for resolving Thurston's conjectures on hyperbolic 3-manifolds, and validates this program in significant cases. Illustrated with over 100 figures, this book will interest graduate students and researchers working in geometry, algebra, and topology.

Offering the insights of L.S. Pontryagin, one of the foremost thinkers in modern mathematics, the second volume in this four-volume set examines the nature and processes that make up topological groups. Already hailed as the leading work in this subject for its abundance of examp...les and its thorough explanations, the text is arranged so that readers can follow the material either sequentially or schematically. Stand-alone chapters cover such topics as topological division rings, linear representations of compact topological groups, and the concept of a lie group.

As a special feature, no additional assumptions on the probability space in the background, such as completeness or a countable generated alg...ebra, are made.
