            The amount of loads carried in backpacks by school children has been increasing over the last two decades raising concerns among medical practitioners and parents about the possible detrimental effects prolonged heavy load carriage can have on the musculoskeletal system. Previous... studies have indicated that loads higher than 15% of body weight affect the gait and trunk posture of children and can cause long term musculoskeletal problems. It has been reported in many countries that due to the structure of the curriculum, children usually carry loads as high as 22-25% of their body weight. Therefore, it is important that ergonomic backpacks be designed in order to alleviate the musculoskeletal stress. The present study investigated whether it was better to place the loads high up or low down on the back. Three different load amounts 10%, 15% and 20% body weight loads were carried on two locations (high and low) on the back. Kinematic, kinetic, temporal, spatial and muscle activity data at the lower and upper back muscles was collected and studied.

            Most EIT machines operate at high frequencies above 10 kHz. Biological systems demonstrate dispersions of electrical impedance characteristics at very low frequencies below 2 kHz due to the presence of membrane surrounding the cells and diffusion polarization effects. This book e...laborate the feasibility of the use of low frequencies in a range of 1 Hz to 4.5 kHz in EIT. A frequency of 78 kHz normally used in EIT was used as a comparison. The impedance measurements employed a four-terminal method using an ultra low frequency impedance spectrometer and used conducting and insulating material as the objects. The reconstructed images reveal that at low frequencies the conducting and insulating bodies were indistinguishable. They appear differently at high frequencies above 4.55 kHz indicating that the use of multi-frequency instrumentation in EIT covering the very low frequency range provides information that instrumentation restricted to frequencies above 10 kHz does not supply. This has potential for EIT because it might allow the detection of structures from the variation of the images with frequency that does not occur at the higher frequencies more usually used for EIT.

            Computational modeling of cooperative dynamics in excitable systems is important for uncovering mechanisms that underlie perturbation propagation in the nervous system. In this dissertation, two spatially extended networks of FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons operating in the subexcitable ...and hyperexcitable regime are studied by computational methods, leading to two key conclusions. First, the length and speed of perturbation propagation in the subexcitable FitzHugh-Nagumo system is maximized by spatiotemporal noise of optimal intensity. This indicates that random fluctuations in neuronal excitability can enhance perturbation propagation in the nervous system. Second, defining novel measures to characterize the synchronization of hyperexcitable FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillator networks for various strengths of phase- attractive and phase-repulsive coupling, significant differences in calcium dynamics can be shown between astrocyte cultures originating from epileptic and normal brain tissue.

            In this study, different turbulence models like k-epsilon and k-omega SST model are tested by comparing them against experimental data given by Deshpande and Giddens 1976. The stenosed geometry of 75 % area reduction is used for comparison. CFD code FLUENT 6.2 is used to solve th...e flow equations and a steady state flow with 2D axi-symmetric geometry is considered with Reynolds number of 5000. For lamnar flow in CCA, Reynolds numbers 50, 100 and 200 were used and the results were compared with the experimental data as given by Ahmed Giddens and Mabon. The results for laminar study were also obtained by varying the degree of occlusion i.e. 75 %, 56 % and two geometries with 89% area reduction. The models were named as M0, M1, M2 and M3. In the study, we found that model M3 is highly severe stenosis and a medical scanned image approximating this kind of geometry must be seriously examined.

Thus, the present work investigates (i) the reproductive structures of bambara groundnut lines as a prelude to ascertaining the causes of hybridization failure in breeding programmes and, (ii) the yield potentials of bambara groundnut lines in relation to the reproductive biology, floral and agronomic traits. The findings are novel and the methodology adopted could be extended and utilized in addressing artificial hybridization problems in other crops. This work should be recommended for plant breeders, research institutions and scientists in agronomy and crop improvement.
