covers Auckland cricket for the first half of the twentieth century. The book is being launched at Eden Park during the Indian test on February 8th during the lunch break and will be available after that. The cover picture tells the story really so I've put the names in and a lit...tle explanation as to who's who. EDEN DISTRICTS CRICKET CLUB - WINNERS FIRST GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP 1907-08 Left to right: T. Hodgson (President), A. Freeman (scorer), F. Taylor, G. Hayward, G. Mills, T. Elliott, A.E. Relf (captain), I. Mills, W. Brook-Smith, G.B. Cummings, W.I. Stemson, H.W. Hobson, A. Murdoch, J.H. Buckland (Hon. Sec.) This photo was taken at Eden Park before taking the field. This powerful Eden Districts Xl contained four New Zealand players in George Mills, Ike Mills, Bill Brook-Smith and Bill Stemson. George Hayward, Tom Elliott and George Cummings played for Auckland at some stage. Last but not least captain-coach Albert Relf played thirteen tests for England and was the key player in the first successful challenge for the Plunket Shield in 1907. His club batting average was 110 and he took 41 wickets. This is a sample. The cover actually shows the guy who is obscured. Eden Districts won all ten matches in the First Grade Championship. Much of the side's success was down to Relf's coaching, but for all that it was a very useful side. It is old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words but in this case it could not be more right. This is how senior club cricketers looked like in Edwardian times. Cricket was still a very formal sport and vestiges of the Victorian era are present. Officials in suits, the moustaches and cummerbunds worn by the players show this. As far as NZ wide interest is concerned There are score sheets and accounts of countless matches against Wellington, Otago and Canterbury, although obviously it's slanted towards Auckland.
