A Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter uncovers the story of the shocking rise and fall of a decorated Navy SEAL accused of war crimes, the fellow SEALs who turned him in, and the court martial that captivated the nation. A Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter uncovers the story of the sho...cking rise and fall of a decorated Navy SEAL accused of war crimes, the fellow SEALs who turned him in, and the court martial that captivated the nation. After nearly twenty years of military service, Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher, who was admiringly described by those who served with him as 'aggressive', had risen in the elite command teams to the rank of chief petty officer. But one bright May morning in 2017, Gallagher's trademark aggression culminated in the death of an unnamed ISIS fighter. Several men in Alpha platoon swore they saw their platoon chief murder the captive in cold blood that morning. Others said they saw no such thing. The revelations that followed when his fellow SEALs turned him in would result in a court-martial that divided his platoon, then the SEALs, the Navy, the Pentagon, the White House, and ultimately the American public. This is a story about a commando who was inspired to serve his nation, who became addicted to combat, and whose need to prove himself among his peers pushed him to extremes - and about the handful of SEALs who decided that upholding their moral code was more important than perpetuating an insider's code of silence. But it is also a starkly modern story - one that reveals how pop culture and social media shaped who the sailor was and how he acted, and how the persona he created ultimately found an ally in America's first reality-television president, Donald Trump.

Tracing the timeline of America's conflict in Afghanistan from 2002 to the present, an authoritative history of America's longest war. The American war in Afghanistan, which began in 2002, is now the longest armed conflict in the nation's history. It is currently winding down, an...d American troops are likely to leave before too long-but only after an eighteen-year stay. In The American War in Afghanistan, Carter Malkasian--at once a leading academic authority on the subject, a senior advisor to the US military command in Afghanistan, and former governor of a province there--provides the first authoritative history of the entire conflict. Drawing from a deep well of local knowledge and access to top decision makers, Malkasian moves through its multiple phases: the 2002 invasion and after; the reduction in America's presence after the 2003 Iraq invasion; the resurgence of the Taliban in the late 2000s, the Obama-era surge, and the various resets in strategy and force allocations that occurred in the 2010s. Today, the Taliban remains a powerful force, and sees victory as probable. The ultimate outcome after America leaves is inherently unpredictable given the multitude of factions there, but one thing is sure: America did not understand the enemy it was fighting, and mistakenly thought that Western imports like good governance and economic development could compete with the Islamist-inflected nationalism of the Taliban. Wise and all-encompassing, The American War in Afghanistan provides a truly vivid portrait of the conflict in all of its phases that will stand as the most significant account of America's longest war for years to come.

In the 11 months between August 1971 and July 1972, Northern Ireland experienced its worst year of violence. The 'year of chaos' came between of two major military operations, namely the introduction of internment of IRA suspects, without trial, and Operation Motorman, the invasi...on of barricaded no-go areas in Belfast and Derry. The internment raids created huge disaffection in the Catholic communities and provoked an escalation of violence. This led to the British government taking full control of Northern Ireland and negotiating directly with the IRA leadership. Operation Motorman, on a similar scale, then dampened down the violence a year later. No future year of the Troubles experienced such death and destruction. During this whole period, Malachi O'Doherty was a cub reporter in Belfast, working in the city, covering the violence, returning home at night to a no-go area behind the barricades where the streets were patrolled by armed IRA men. O'Doherty takes readers on a journey, at this time of crucial change, through the events of that terrible year, which he argues should be a reminder that political and military miscalculation can lead to civil war and that there is no more urgent need for creative political thinking than now, in the new instability created by demographic change, one hundred years after the partition of Ireland.
