In this insider's investigation of the global elite's efforts to 'change the world', Anand Giridharadas takes us into the inner sanctums of a new gilded age, where the rich and powerful fight for equality and justice any way they can - except ways that threaten the social order a...nd their position at the top. Why should our gravest problems be solved by the unelected upper crust instead of the public institutions it erodes by lobbying and dodging taxes? Why should we rely on scraps from the winners? Trenchant and revelatory, this is a call to action for elites and everyday citizens alike.Anand Giridharadas is a political analyst for MSNBC and he teaches journalism at New York University. He has been a foreign correspondent and columnist for the New York Times and a McKinsey analyst.

            Tales from Boom Town revised

Tales from Boom Town revised (EPUB ebook)

            By Kennedy, Peter

Revised and Updated, with analysis by the ABC's Antony Green. Veteran political journalist Peter Kennedy has spent nearly fifty years observing twelve Premiers of Western Australia, across an extraordinary period of change in Western Australia's history, from 1970 to 2019. ...His insider account reveals issues linked with the jailing of two Premiers and a deputy Premier, the ruthless removal of a Premier mid-term, the election of the nation's first female Premier, and the sensational 'WA Inc' Royal Commission. With his distinctive style of commentary, Kennedy notes how the changes in the twelve Premiers reflect the development of the state, revealing the personal maneouverings linked with a number of key decisions. Interviewing former Premiers, Prime Ministers and other national figures, the result is a lively book about how politics is played in the boom-bust West, still clearly an economic powerhouse of the twenty first century in Australia. This updated and revised edition covers Mark McGowan's first two years as WA Premier after a landslide victory over Colin Barnett in the 2017 state election. It also features a foreword by the ABC's election analyst, Antony Green, that addresses the need for reform in the Legislative Council.

Is Turkey De-Europeanising?: Encounters with Europe in a Candidate Country

This comprehensive edited volume conceptually develops the notion of `de-Europeanisation' as an important development in the literature on Europeanisation, and applies it specifically to the case of Turkey. `De-Europeanisation' is defined as the loss or weakening of the EU/Europe... as a normative/political context and as a reference point in domestic settings and national public debates of both candidate and member countries. `De-Europeanisation' manifests itself in two basic ways: as the weakening of the appeal and influential capacity of European institutions, policies, norms and values, leading to a retreat of EU/ Europe as a normative/political context for society and politics in a candidate/member state; and as growing scepticism and indifference in a given society towards the EU/Europe, risking the legitimacy of the EU/Europe as a reference point in cases even where reform is incurred. Using this concept, the authors analyse the diminishing impact of the EU in Turkish governance and politics after the opening of accession negotiations in October 2005. The relevance of `de-Europeanisation' is investigated through ten chapters focusing on key policy areas including education, migration, democracy, the rule of law and media freedoms, and a number of key actors including civil society organisations, political parties and political leaders. This book was originally published as a special issue of South European Society and Politics.

This book is the outcome of a multiyear process of participatory meetings, individual and collective writings, and insightful criticisms sponsored by the Kettering Foundation regarding the intersection of community development and democratic practice. The collective outcome from ...these processes is a wide range of innovative articles at the forefront of thinking about the intersections of power, participation, and engagement in the realm of community practice. The authors highlight a range of case studies that vary by location, scale, and purpose. The book serves as a heuristic framework for `democratic community development' and raises several related questions about how democracy, community, and the public are constituted, and what processes, end goals, methods, and tools are to be used to further democratic community development. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal Community Development.

Federalism and Decentralization in Sub-Saharan Africa

The 1990s were marked by democratic reforms throughout Africa, which went in tandem with decentralization reforms. The chapters of the volume all highlight the gradual changes that have taken place since. Long-term structural uncodified factors - be it societal, economic, geograp...hic, demographic - seem to have interacted with the constitutional clauses introduced during the reforms. Some chapters look at how decentralization slowly gave way to recentralization because none of the new subnational entities were politically and economically strong enough to balance off the center; some look at how inherent deficiencies in infrastructure and personnel at the subnational level brought the central government back in; some look at how different subnational units ended up working differently due to differences in demographic and social factors; some look at how uncodified factors came to determine how national politics functioned; some look at how decentralization created new conflicts between ethnic groups competing for the control of the new entities; some look at how decentralization blew new life into traditional authorities. This book was original published as a special issue of Regional and Federal Studies.

The Russia Hoax: The Illicit Scheme to Clear Hillary Clinton and Frame Donald Trump

The Russia Hoax: The Illicit Scheme to Clear Hillary Clinton and Frame Donald Trump (EPUB ebook)

            By Jarrett, Gregg

Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett reveals the real story behind Hillary Clinton's deep state collaborators in government and exposes their nefarious actions during and after the 2016 election. The Russia Hoaxreveals how persons within the FBI and Barack Obama's Justice Departme...nt worked improperly to help elect Hillary Clinton and defeat Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. When this suspected effort failed, those same people appear to have pursued a contrived investigation of President Trump in an attempt to undo the election results and remove him as president. The evidence suggests that partisans within the FBI and the Department of Justice, driven by personal animus and a misplaced sense of political righteousness, surreptitiously acted to subvert electoral democracy in our country. The book will examine:How did Hillary Clinton manage to escape prosecution despite compelling evidence she violated the law?Did Peter Strzok, James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Loretta Lynch, and others obstruct justice by protecting Clinton? Why was there never a legitimate criminal investigation of Clinton in the Uranium One case? Are the text messages exchanged between Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page evidence of a concerted effort to undermine the electoral process? Was there ever any real evidence of "collusion" between Trump and the Russians?Did Trump obstruct justice in the firing of Comey or was he legally exercising his constitutional authority?Did the FBI and DOJ improperly use a discredited "dossier" about Trump to obtain a FISA warrant to spy on Trump associates?Should Muller have disqualified himself under the special counsel law based on glaring conflicts of interest? Was fired National Security Adviser Michael Flynn unfairly charged with making a false statement? With insightful analysis and a fact-filled narrative, The Russia Hoax delves deeply into Democrat wrongdoing.

Orange Chinook: Politics in the New Alberta

Orange Chinook: Politics in the New Alberta (EPUB ebook)

Edited by Bratt, Duane; Brownsey, Keith; Sutherland, Richard; Taras, David

In 2015, the New Democratic Party won an unprecedented victory in Alberta. Unseating the Progressive Conservatives-who had won every provincial election since 1971-they formed an NDP government for the first time in the history of the province. Orange Chinook is the first sch...olarly analysis of this election. It examines the legacy of the Progressive Conservative dynasty, the PC and NDP campaigns, polling, and online politics, providing context and setting the stage. It highlights the importance of Alberta's energy sector and how it relates to provincial politics with focus on the oil sands, the carbon tax, and pipelines. Examining the NDP in power, Orange Chinook draws on Indigenous, urban, and rural perspectives to explore the transition process and government finances and politics. It explores the governing style of premier Rachel Notley, paying special attention to her response to the 2016 For McMurray wildfire and to the role of women in politics. Orange Chinook brings together Alberta's top political watchers in this fascinating, multifaceted analysis.

This book examines a range of visual expressions of Black Power across American art and popular culture from 1965 through 1972. It begins with case studies of artist groups, including Spiral, OBAC and AfriCOBRA, who began questioning Western aesthetic traditions and created work ...that honored leaders, affirmed African American culture, and embraced an African lineage. Also showcased is an Oakland Museum exhibition of 1968 called New Perspectives in Black Art, as a way to consider if Black Panther Party activities in the neighborhood might have impacted local artists' work. The concluding chapters concentrate on the relationship between selected Black Panther Party members and visual culture, focusing on how they were covered by the mainstream press, and how they self-represented to promote Party doctrine and agendas.
