Dream lifestyles around New Zealand's coastlines and waterways - stories and sensational images of people who have made these enviable life choices, and what it has taken them to get there. How often do you wish you could stay on at your holiday destination? Many people dream of ...a waterfront home and a laid-back lifestyle on the beach or beside the lake. This book tells the fascinating stories of a range of people who have made it happen. The lifestyles are enviable, but it takes planning, tough decisions and hard graft to get there. From family baches passed down through generations and brought back to life to architect-designed beach houses for young families, there is a simplicity of approach and single-minded focus on the end goals that is common through widely different situations. Would you be prepared to pull your kids out of mainstream schools, and home school them so they can live on a wild beach. Would you give up your career and find another way of working so you could surf/swim/kayak every day? These pages tell the stories of people who have done just that and are living their fantasy. Homes and people covered are in- Ahipara; Bay of Islands; Matapouri Bay; Whananaki; Piha; Raglan; Pauanui; Lake Rotoiti; Papamoa; Gisborne; Mahia Peninsula; Oakura; Golden Bay; Pelorus Sound; Greymouth; Kaikoura; and Dunedin.

The drama of New Zealand's changeable weather. Are the events we are seeing a sign of permanent change? A compelling, informative and highly illustrated series of investigations into the different types of weather events that occur in New Zealand. It covers the likes of cyclones,... heat waves, snow and drought, recounting gripping eye witness accounts and explaining just what's going on behind them all. Popular science writer Gerard Hutching has found a range of people affected by diverse weather events over the decades and tells their stories, bringing these events to life - from the dramatic to the humorous. A dairy farmer and his quad bike are lifted 5 metres into the air by a cyclone then dropped 100 metres away. An embattled farmer forced to buy feed to keep his herd going through prolonged drought creates 'art' with his arrangement of the grain on a hillside. The science behind each type of weather is then explained in simple accessible terms by the scientists from MetService. And behind it all lies the big question - are these events a result of climate change? An introduction by well-known climatologist Professor James Fenwick begins the discussion. Contents- Weather in a Changing Climate; Understanding the Weather; The Ocean and the Weather; Tropical Cyclones; Rain; Wind; Snow; Drought; Heatwaves; Storm Surge; Thunder and Lightning; Hail; Tornadoes; Fog; Frost.

The life of wanderer, long-distance tramper and legendary hut-bagger Paul Kilgour Paul Kilgour has had a life-long obsession with New Zealand's back-country huts. He's 'bagged' a record 1159 of them in total, and he's still going. He grew up in rural Northland. It was a different... time. His father would watch on proudly as the boys jumped from tree-top to tree-top in the old macrocarpas, 30 metres off the ground. Paul began going on epic trips as a young boy, beyond the farm and along the coast. During these wanderings he would meet elderly folk living in tiny huts out the back of farms, on cliff tops, in remote and beautiful locations. All along the coastline were inconspicuous places with even more inconspicuous huts. There were also many small baches, always unlocked. Paul would use them as a place to bunk for the night, leaving a note to say 'thank you', as was the custom of the day. Even at school, Paul would drift beyond the school yard, up valleys, over hills ('mountains in his my imagination'), along ridges, though farm paddocks, across streams and creeks, over sand-dunes and along miles of wild and rugged west coast beaches. Deep inside him stirred the spirit of adventure, the desire to go further. All Who Wander is a book about one man's lifetime spent with a pack on his back, off the beaten path, and finding shelter in the wilderness.
