Who Am I? is a question at the centre of what it is to be human and for artist Kelcy Taratoa (Ngai Te Rangi, Ngati Ranginui, Ngati Raukawa) it has formed the sub-ject of his painting for two decades. Kelcy Taratoa: Who Am I ?... Episode 001 is a bilingual English and Te Reo publi...cation written by Warren Feeney and translated by Heni Jacob (Ngati Raukawa). It traverses the artist's life from growing up in the suburbs of Levin to Te Haka a Te Tupere, the artist's wharenui at Rangiwaea marae in Tauranga Harbour. Through his paintings he contends that contemporary technology's virtual realities and appetite for destruction and distraction is undermining our humanity and experience of the world. Yet painting, that most ancient means of visual communication, is something that continues to remind us of our humanness.

Birds are a revelation. Radiating grace, intelligence and humour, they tantalise the human imagination. Working for years in his studio and in the field, internationally acclaimed photographer Tim Flach has portrayed nature's most alluring creatures alertly at rest and dramatical...ly in flight, capturing intricate feather patterns and subtle colouration invisible to the naked eye. From familiar friends, including the king penguin and the black swan, to marvellous rarities, such as the kagu and the Bali myna, Flach conveys the dazzling diversity of birds. Here are all manner of songbirds, parrots and birds of paradise; birds of prey, waterbirds and theatrical domestic breeds. Witness the shy gaze of the southern cassowary and the fearless stare of the Andean condor; marvel at the peregrine falcon - the fastest animal on Earth - in flight, wings outstretched, and the iridescent plumage of the Himalayan monal. Compelling text by prominent ornithologist Richard O. Prum takes the reader into the deep history of birds, ancestors of the dinosaurs living among us, and sheds light on the distinct behaviours of each species. Discover how female guira cuckoos lay eggs in shared nests, distinguishing their own with unique markings, and why the Nicobar pigeon swallows small colourful stones. Learn of the vulturine guineafowl's penchant for fallen fruit, the common ostrich's rapid growth rate, and more as you navigate your way through these pages. The result of much patience, precision and persistence, Birds features more than 130 extraordinary photographs. Putting us face-to-face with some of Earth's most magnetic living beings, Flach evokes the magnificence of the animal kingdom - and the urgent need to protect and defend it.

India Retold: Dialogues with Independent Documentary Filmmakers in India is an attempt to situate and historicize the engagement of independent documentary filmmakers with the postcolonial India and its discourses with a focus on their independent documentary practices. Structure...d as an interview collection, the book examines how these documentary filmmakers, though not a homogeneous category, practice their independence through their ideology, their filmmaking praxis, their engagement with the everyday and their formal experiments. As a sparsely studied filmmakers, the book through meticulously tracing a wide ranging historical transitions (often marked by communal conflicts and the forces of globalization) not only details the ways in which independent filmmakers in India address the questions of postcolonial nation and its modernist projects but also explores their idiosyncratic views of these filmmakers which are characterized by a definitive departure from the logic of commercial films or state-sponsored documentary films. More important in many ways, these documentary filmmakers expose incongruences in national institutions and programs, embrace the voice of the underrepresented, and thus, imagine an alternative vision of the nation. During the last three years of the execution of the project, thirty Indian documentary filmmakers are interviewed in this book. Given the dearth of quality interviews and little theoretical engagement with documentary as a genre, this book would not only fill in the gap in scholarship but also would serve as an authentic guide for interested readers and for documentary filmmakers alike.

Singing Soviet Stagnation: Vocal Cycles from the USSR, 1964-1985 explores the ways in which the aftershock of an apparent crisis in Soviet identity after the death of Stalin in 1953 can be detected in selected musical-literary works of what has become known as the 'Stagnation' er...a (1964-1985). Richard Louis Gillies traces the cultural impact of this shift through the intersection between music, poetry, and identity, presenting close readings of three substantial literary-musical works by three of the period's most prominent composers of songs and vocal cycles: Seven Poems of Aleksandr Blok, Op. 127 (1966-1967) by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) Russia Cast Adrift (1977) by Georgy Sviridov (1915-1998) Stupeni (1981-1982; 1997) by Valentin Silvestrov (b. 1937). The study elaborates an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of musical-literary artworks that does not rely on existing models of musical analysis or on established modes of literary criticism, thereby avoiding privileging one discipline over the other. It will be of particular significance for scholars, students, and performers with an interest in Russian and Soviet music, the intersection between music and poetry, and the history of Russian and East European culture, politics, and identity during the twentieth century.
