Making a city that works for children creates a city that better serves all of its residents, across ages and abilities. Yet we have created unsafe street conditions for children in cities around the world. Every day more than 500 children die in road crashes globally. The physic...al and mental health benefits of walking and biking are challenged by speeding traffic and unsafe pedestrian rights of way. Streets that are designed with the needs of children and their caregivers in mind have been shown to improve road safety, health, and quality of life. Building on the success of their Global Street Design Guide, the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO)-Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI) Streets for Kids program has developed child-focused design guidance to inspire leaders, inform practitioners, and empower communities around the world to consider their city from the eyes of a child. The guidance in Designing Streets for Kids captures international best practices, strategies, programs, and policies that cities around the world have used to design streets and public spaces that are safe and appealing to children from their earliest days. The guidance also highlights tactics for engaging children in the design process, an often-overlooked approach that can dramatically transform how streets are designed and used. From addressing the lack of mobility options to noise and air pollution, this graphics-rich guide will help to design better streets, and thereby better cities, for kids of all ages and their caregivers. Designing Streets for Kids provides both inspiration and application. By focusing speci?cally on children and caregivers, this book fills a significant void in physical urban design guidance.

For nearly 50 years, the extraordinary community of Kowloon Walled City cut a dark presence in the heart of Hong Kong. Yet without legislation and with little regard for basic services, planning regulations or building standards, the City not only survived, it positively thrived.... But how could such a place exist in a modern metropolis without administrative oversight - 'triply neglected', to use a Hong Kong term - by the British, Chinese and Hong Kong Governments? Who would choose to live there? And why? Some of these questions were answered in our book City of Darkness: Life in Kowloon Walled City, but for various reasons a number of key elements were left out. City of Darkness Revisited fills in these gaps and brings the story up to date, mixing photographs and interviews found in the original book with a wide range of new material that has come to light over the past 20 years, in the form of new photographs, drawings, maps, documents and essays, many previously unpublished. City of Darkness Revisited explores in greater detail than ever before the Walled City's dramatic growth between 1945 and 1990, while at the same time looking into the darker sides of its past and exposing the truth behind many of the myths that gave the City its abiding sense of mystery. We explain how the City's clearance came about and shine a light on why previous attempts to rid Hong Kong of this notorious enclave always failed, stymied over the matter of its dual jurisdiction. Bringing the story up to date, the book also discusses how perceptions of the City have changed so dramatically in the 20 years since its demolition - shunned by most Hong Kong residents during its lifetime, but now seen as part of the city's rich cultural and architectural heritage. And finally, we explore how the City and the myths that swirl around it have infiltrated architectural debate and popular culture through film, literature, Japanese manga, video games, art and design. In this book Professor Rice looks at the chimneys that have adorned the citys skyline since 1850 from the domestic to the commercial and the industrial. It also considers the history of the European chimney from its first appearance in the medieval period to its modern day equiva...lent. Having collected material for a chimney book for some years, Professor Rice, who is Professor of History at the University of Canterbury, was spurred into action by the September 2010 Christchurch earthquake which destroyed much of the citys chimney heritage. The February 2011 earthquake destroyed even more. While noting the quirky and the unusual, All Fall Down also documents the typical styles of successive stylistic periods, from late Victorian to Art Deco, and the latest versions on new houses. It also looks at a style of chimney pot, the Homebush pot, produced in Glentunnel between 1880 and 1890 and distinctive to the Canterbury region. Professor Rice said his fascination with chimneys and chimney pots stemmed from his childhood in the smoggy Christchurch of the 1950s, and was furthered by his interest in medieval and Tudor buildings. Later on, his research on eighteenth-century England, where chimneys were status symbols and a display of wealth, and his travels around Europe, added to this interest
