An exhibition catalogue - with beautiful photographs and essays Tungaru: The Kiribati Project' is a collaboration between contemporary New Zealand artists, Chris Charteris and Jeff Smith. Tungaru is the pre-colonial name for Kiribati. The project was born out of Chris' desire... to return to Kiribati, to meet his family and to experience life on these tiny strips of atoll in the Pacific. Always with a camera in hand, Jeff was there to capture much of the journey. The exhibition is not only a personal story about family but one that also references the larger global issues of climate change, over-population and threats to traditional cultures. The exhibition features a selection of artworks from Chris, an interactive Kiribati warrior created by Jeff, and archival footage of Kiribati, alongside pieces from the Museum's Kiribati collections.

            Vivian Maier: The Color Work

Vivian Maier: The Color Work (EPUB ebook)

            By Westerbeck, Colin

The first definitive monograph of color photographs by American street photographer Vivian Maier.Photographer Vivian Maier's allure endures even though many details of her life continue to remain a mystery. Her story-the secretive nanny-photographer who became a pioneer photograp...her-has only been pieced together from the thousands of images she made and the handful of facts that have surfaced about her life. Vivian Maier: The Color Work is the largest and most highly curated published collection of Maier's full-color photographs to date. With a foreword by world-renowned photographer Joel Meyerowitz and text by curator Colin Westerbeck, this definitive volume sheds light on the nature of Maier's color images, examining them within the context of her black-and-white work as well as the images of street photographers with whom she clearly had kinship, like Eugene Atget and Lee Friedlander. With more than 150 color photographs, most of which have never been published in book form, this collection of images deepens our understanding of Maier, as its immediacy demonstrates how keen she was to record and present her interpretation of the world around her.

Whangarei Art Museum has been immersed in an important 'heritage rescue project' over the past four years. This exhibition will document not only the remarkable story of these important works to our national history of art, but also their own journey of despair and desecration, n...ow brought back to resplendent life. Found abandoned in an attic many of these works would have seemed beyond redemption to many but this exhibition will also highlight the science of art conservation and the generosity of sponsors. Several of the works including one drawing were almost savagely mistreated in an unknown past. In another instance, two paintings have been separated where the artist had also painted on the reverse and an extra painting is now framed and revealed to the public. All the art works have been beautifully custom-framed and many will be accompanied by 'before and after' texts. Over $30,000 in grants was raised by the art museum to acquire the collection and begin the remedial treatment needed. Just this month, Webb's have valued this collection now at $68,000 but it is the historical importance of these works which is set to grow exponentially.
