Eastern Approaches to Western Film: Asian Aesthetics and Reception in Cinema offers a renewed critical outlook on Western classic film directly from the pantheon of European and American masters, including Alfred Hitchcock, George Lucas, Robert Bresson, Carl Dreyer, Jean-Pierre M...elville, John Ford, Leo McCarey, Sam Peckinpah, and Orson Welles. The book contributes an Eastern Approach into the critical studies of Western films by reappraising selected films of these masters, matching and comparing their visions, themes, and ideas with the philosophical and paradigmatic principles of the East. It traces Eastern inscriptions and signs embedded within these films as well as their social lifestyle values and other concepts that are also inherently Eastern. As such, the book represents an effort to reformulate established discourses on Western cinema that are overwhelmingly Eurocentric. Although it seeks to inject an alternative perspective, the ultimate aim is to reach a balance of East and West. By focusing on Eastern aesthetic and philosophical influences in Western films, the book suggests that there is a much more thorough integration of East and West than previously thought or imagined.

My Voyage to Italy (1999), Martin Scorsese's personal documentary excursion through his formative experiences with Italian cinema, stands as a key progenitor for Scorsese's resuscitated documentary practice today, and it also sheds critical light on the director's wide-ranging - ...and largely ignored - turn to history throughout his recent work. Like many of his subsequent documentaries, the film offers both a rendering of personal accounts and a deeper excavation of the past, and in so doing it becomes an exemplar of what Michael Witt calls audiovisual historiography : it writes its history with this very particular arrangement of images and sounds. Martin Scorsese's Documentary Histories: Migrations, Movies, Music offers the first extended investigation of these matters by decisively re-situating Scorsese's varied late-period works within the context of contemporary practices and theories of audiovisual historiography. Scorsese's idiosyncratic historiography has since traveled across assorted media, and today it includes an ongoing series of such personal documentary testaments to the cinema's past such as A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies (1995); lengthy compilations devoted to safeguarding various forms of popular culture like The Blues (2003); and several historical fictions, or what Scorsese has tellingly called his archaeological renderings of the past like The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). Martin Scorsese's Documentary Histories opens new pathways for specialists and non-specialists alike to approach the director's considerable body of work, but also seeks to subtly reorient our thinking about the production of historical knowledge in today's rapidly expanding media environment.

The Persistence of Television examines more than 60 years of television - including popular shows such as Doctor Who, Twin Peaks, and NYPD Blue - to identify the elements that have entertained and informed viewers from the beginning of mass broadcasting to the present day, propos...ing that most television viewing is rooted in traditional programming that is received in conventional ways. On-screen faces, programmes and genres, and production practices drawn from British, American and Australian television services are examined to demonstrate how continuity persists in the face of change. There's no denying the excitement or the value of the new, but the contributors to this book argue that it runs in tandem with enduring aspects of the already existing.

Sam Rohdie's insightful and compelling analysis of Luchino Visconti's 1960 epic of modern urban life provides reveals the film as one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian cinema. Rocco tells the story of a family of peasants uprooted from their village in southern Italy, and f...orced to battle for existence in the industrial metropolis of Milan. Though fascinated by the social reality of modern Italy, Visconti had by this time thrown off the influence of the neorealist movement. He had developed a style all his own, enriched by his experience of directing opera for the stage. As a result, the characters in Rocco are no longer held in check by the naturalistic conventions of neorealism. Instead, they erupt on the screen with all the emotional power of heightened melodrama. The violent sexuality projected by stars Alain Delon, Annie Girardot, Claudia Cardinale and the rest of Visconti's impressive cast was too much for the Italian censors, who cut several scenes. Rohdie discusses the film in terms of its 'passionate splendid realism', arguing that these two apparently opposing moods are held in balance rather than contradiction in the film, part of 'the very condition of the film's power - and grace.'

The Seventh Seal is probably Bergman's best-known work and the film that most clearly bears the director's unmistakeable signature. The opening scene sets the tone: a stony beach under a leaden sky, the knight alone with his thoughts, then the approach of black-clad Death, whom t...he knight invites to play a game of chess. Bergman's medieval allegory of faith and doubt is dark with the horrors of witch-burnings and the plague. But it is also shot through with bright flashes of peace and joy, symbolised in the milk and wild strawberries offered to the knight by an innocent family of actors. In his compelling appreciation, Melvyn Bragg describes his own first encounter as a student with this extraordinary film, and how it revealed to him another cinema, quite different from the Hollywood he had grown up with. He recounts too his later meeting with Bergman himself, and how the marks of the director's powerful personality are everywhere in this troubling and inspiring masterpiece.

The Big Sleep: Marlowe and Vivian practising kissing; General Sternwood shivering in a hothouse full of orchids; a screenplay, co-written by Faulkner, famously mysterious and difficult to solve. Released in 1946, Howard Hawks' adaptation of Raymond Chandler reunited Bogart and Ba...call and gave them two of their most famous roles. The mercurial but ever-manipulative Hawks dredged humour and happiness out of film noir. 'Give him a story about more murders than anyone can keep up with, or explain,' David Thomson writes in his compelling study of the film, 'and somehow he made a paradise.' When it was first shown to a military audience The Big Sleep was coldly received. So, as Thomson reveals, Hawks shot extra scenes, 'fun' scenes, to replace one in which the film's murders had been explained, and in so doing left the plot unresolved. Thomson argues that, if this was accidental, it also signalled a change in the nature of Hollywood cinema: 'The Big Sleep inaugurates a post-modern, camp, satirical view of movies being about other movies that extends to the New Wave and Pulp Fiction.'

That's a lot of horse hockey, Hamilton. Described by the New York Times as classic activist theater and a cross between 'A Christmas Carol' and a trial at The Hague's International Criminal Court. In this his latest work, the protean Ishmael Reed--the legendary artist and prolifi...c writer--continues to burnish his already sterling reputation by dismantling the 'Creation Myth' of the founding of the U.S., as represented in the incredibly profitable play and musical, Hamilton. Reed, a verbal acrobat of global renown, demonstrates here why he is widely considered to be the leading intellectual in the U.S. today. -Gerald Horne, author of The Counter-Revolution of 1776: Slave Resistance and the Origins of the USA This powerful play, originally produced at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, comprehensively dismantles the phenomenon of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Hamilton. Reed uses the musical's crimes against history to insist on a radical, cleareyed way of looking at our past and our selves. Both durable and timely, this goes beyond mere corrective - it is a meticulously researched rebuttal, an absorbing drama, and brilliant rallying cry for justice. The perfect tie-in to both the success of and backlash to Hamilton, it will be the major voice in contrast to the upcoming movie. It captures both the earnest engagement that fans of the musical desire, as well as the exhausted disbelief of those who can't stand it. Teachers, students and fans of drama, literature, and history will find much to love. It is written by one of America's most respected and original writers, who is eagerly promoting it, and who is long overdue for a renaissance.
