The family has been linked... to Kakahi ever since. On the family car trips of her childhood, McIntyre got used to her fathers frequent stops for subject matter for painting. Fifty years on, when she moved to Kakahi to work as a district nurse, she began to do the same on her rounds, as a photographer. This book brings together her remarkable photographic exploration her observations of Kakahi and the sparsely populated surrounding King Country towns of Manunui, Ohura, Ongarue, Piriaka, Owhango and Taumarunui.

TheBMW Art Journey is a joint initiative of Art Basel and BMW that offers artists an opportunity to undertake a journey of creative discovery to a destination of their own choosing. Like a mobile studio, the BMW Art Journey can take an artist to almost anywhere in the world-to es...tablish contacts, to forge perspectives, to envision and create new work. The BMW Art Journey is open to artists exhibited in the Discoveries sector of Art Basel in Hong Kong. Zac Langdon-Pole's journey Sutures of the Skyhas taken him across a world that humans and birds have been navigating through millennia. He followed the flight paths of birds like the white stork or the arctic tern, traveling along the earth's axis where the Northern and Southern Hemispheres' summers intersect. Migrating birds cover some of the longest distances traveled by any living being. Their routes have guided the Polynesian pathfinders across the seas. Inspired by this ancient celestial tracing, the artist questions the position of humans as the center of the world. Weaving through Central Europe, Southern Africa, and the Pacific Islands of Samoa and Hawaii, he seeks to understand how culture intersects with the science of celestial mapping-and from there flows into larger existential inquiries about who we are and how we are situated in the world.

The result of hours of interviews and careful collaboration with the photographers, the Masters of Photography books divide each Master's practice and approach into a series of individual and inspirational lessons. The series begins with Joel Meyerowitz, who will teach you, among... other essentials: how to use a camera to reclaim the streets as your own, why you need to watch the world always with a sense of possibility, how to set your subjects at ease, and the importance of being playful and of finding a lens that suits your personality. This landmark series will teach you all you need to know to both understand the work of the Masters and to go out and shoot your own masterpieces.

Cecil Beaton (1904-1980) is one of the most celebrated British Portrait photographers of the twentieth century and is renowned for his images of elegance, glamour and style. His influence on portrait photography was profound and lives on today in the work of many contemporary pho...tographers. Beaton used his camera, his ambition and his larger-than-life personality to mingle with a flamboyant and rebellious group of artists, writers, socialites and partygoers. These 'Bright Young Things' captured the spirit of the roaring twenties and thirties as they cut a dramatic swathe through the epoch. Beaton quickly developed a reputation for his beautiful, often striking and fantastic photographs, which culminated in his portraits of Queen Elizabeth in 1939. More than a photographer, Beaton became a society fixture in his own right. In a series of themed chapters, covering Beaton's first self-portraits and earliest sitters to his time at Cambridge and as principle society photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair, over 60 leading figures who sat for him are profiled and the dazzling parties, pageants and balls of the period are brought to life. Among this glittering cast are Beaton's socialite sisters Baba and Nancy Beaton, Stephen Tennant, the Mitfords, Siegfried Sassoon, Evelyn Waugh and Daphne Du Maurier. Beaton's photographs are complemented by a wide range of letters, drawings and ephemera and contextualised by artworks created by those in his circle, including Christopher Wood, Rex Whistler and Henry Lamb.

Through the Lens of Faith - Auschwitz

Through the Lens of Faith is Caryl Englander's original and affecting visual archive of witnesses of the Holocaust, presented alongside conversations exploring their diverse belief systems. Englander photographed them during emotive moments of interviewing over the past three yea...rs. The resulting portraits encapsulate mnemonic tensions between an unmasterable past and the present. Englander photographed intense discursive encounters during which writer Henri Lustiger Thaler, chief curator of the Amud Aish Memorial Museum, who has interviewed hundreds of Holocaust survivors, asked Englander's subjects to share their stories of Auschwitz, centering on the question of faith: how did it express itself in an environment that was its complete antithesis? Lustiger Thaler's careful arrangement of the survivors' voices presents their complex spiritual responses and narrates the brutality of everyday life in the concentration camp. In his own words: We present stories that are very different from epic-like narratives of `spiritual resistance.' We engage everyday accounts of life in Auschwitz-Birkenau, where faith functioned as a human anchor, a touchstone for expressions of identity and longings for freedom. Through the Lens of Faith will be realized as an exhibition designed by Daniel Libeskind, the renowned architect of memorial spaces including Berlin's Jewish Museum. The exhibition will open on 1 July 2019 at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum Memorial site and be displayed for the entire 75th commemorative year (2020) of the liberation of the camp. Libeskind's moving design juxtaposes Englander's photos against the visceral entry to Auschwitz, creating confrontation between symbols of imprisonment and freedom. My work is a visual testament to the absolute endurance of human courage. With each person I had the privilege to meet, I felt their resilience, their hope and their joy for life. Caryl Englander

Change in New Zealand society, seen in small towns throughout the North and South Islands, is the subject of Mary Macpherson's Old New World photographic book and touring exhibition. The in-depth study by Wellington-based photographer Mary Macpherson took seven years of travel ar...ound New Zealand to create. Lopdell House Gallery in Auckland has published the 96 page hardback book. It will be launched on 14 June 2012 with an exhibition of over 40 images of Macpherson's work to coincide with the Auckland Festival of Photography. The striking colour photographs feature buildings, houses, statues and murals to tell the story of a shift from the remains of the traditional New Zealand of the 1950s and 60s to places of boom and prosperity that look very different to our remembered past. Within that major story arc, I wanted to show the major social and economic trends I saw over the seven years - towns painting up the main street to attract custom and celebrate their identity, places that remained resolutely themselves and those that were heading into decline, said Mary Macpherson.
