Telling the powerful story of the West Virginia coal mining rebellions of the early 20th century, this book collects material from the leaders, the miners, and the journalists sent to report on the 1912 and 1921 West Virginia mine wars--explosive examples of strikes and union bat...tles. Featured in the text are articles, speeches, and discussions between union leaders such as Samuel Gompers, Frank Keeney, Fred Mooney, Bill Blizzard, and Mother Jones. Also included are U.S. Senate committee testimonies from miners and their family members describing life and work in the coal camps and explaining their participation in the violence. These facts clearly portray the human cost of industry and present the hard choices of a rebellious and often politically radical populace who refuses to be beleaguered under any circumstances.

Using memoir and flashbacks, the quest to find an alternative to the traditional nuclear family and the consumptive wa...y of living is illuminated.

Victor Serge (18901947) played many parts, as he recounted in his indelible Memoirs of a Revolutionary. The son of anti-czarist exiles in Brussels, Serge was a young anarchist in Paris; a syndicalist rebel in Barcelona; a Bolshevik in Petrograd; a Comintern agent in Central Europ...e; a comrade of Trotsky s; a friend of writers like Andrei Bely, Boris Pilnyak, and Andre Breton; a prisoner of Stalin; a dissident Marxist in exile in Mexico . . . Like Serge s extraordinary novels, A Blaze in a Desert: Selected Poems bears witness to decades of revolutionary upheavals in Europe and the advent of totalitarian rule; many of the poems were written during the immense shipwreck of Stalin s ascendancy. In poems datelined Petrograd, Orenburg, Paris, Marseille, the Caribbean, and Mexico, Serge composed elegies for the fallenas well as prospective elegies for the living who, like him, endured prison, exile, and bitter disappointment in the revolutions of the first half of the twentieth century: Night falls, the boat pulls in, stop singing. Exile relights its captive lamps on the shore of time. Throughout A Blaze in a Desert, Serge draws on the heritage of late- and post-Symbolist writers like Verhaeren, Rictus, Apollinaire, Blok, and Belythemselves authors of messages of a more general resistance by the human spiritto express the anguish of the failure of the Russian Revolution and to search out glimmers of hope in the ruins of the Second World War. A Blaze in a Desert comprises Victor Serge s sole published book of poetry, Resistance (1938), his unpublished manuscript Messages (1946), and his last poem, Hands (1947).

This memoir of Clement Duval, a famed 19th-century French anarchist and criminal, details his sentence and eventual escape from the dry guillotine of the French penal colonies on Devil's Island. In this remarkable story of survival by self-determination, courage, conviction, and ...hope, Duval discusses the hellish conditions endured in the penal colonies for 14 years. More than a historical document about the anarchist movement, this memoir serves as a call to action for mindful, conscious people to fight for their rights and stands as a monument to the enduring power of the human spirit.

The pamphlets reprinted in this collection were first published in the 1910s amidst great controversy; the significant works included are Direct Action and Sabotage by William E. Trautmann, Sabotage: Its History, Philosophy and Function by Walker C. Smith, and Elizabeth Gurley Fl...ynn's Sabotage: The Conscious Withdrawal of the Workers' Industrial Efficiency. Even then, the tactics of direct action and sabotage were often associated with the clandestine activity of a militant minority or the desperate acts of the unorganized. The activist authors of the texts in this collection challenged the prevailing stereotypes. As they point out, the practice of direct action, and of sabotage, have been an integral part of the everyday work life of wage-earners in all times and places; direct action is recognized as a valuable and effective tactic by many movements around the globe, and remains a cutting edge tool for social change.

The fight over the tar sands in North America is among the epic environmental and social justice battles of our time, and one of the first that has managed to marry quite explicitly concern for frontline communities and immediate local hazards with fear for the future of the enti...re planet. Tar sands development comes with an enormous environmental and human cost. But tar sands opponents--fighting a powerful international industry--are likened to terrorists; government environmental scientists are muzzled; and public hearings are concealed and rushed. Yet, despite the formidable political and economic power behind the tar sands, many opponents are actively building international networks of resistance, challenging pipeline plans while resisting threats to Indigenous sovereignty and democratic participation. Including leading voices involved in the struggle against the tar sands, A Line in the Tar Sands offers a critical analysis of the impact of the tar sands and the challenges opponents face in their efforts to organize effective resistance. Contributors include Angela Carter, Bill McKibben, Brian Tokar, Christine Leclerc, Clayton Thomas-Muller, Crystal Lameman, Dave Vasey, Emily Coats, Eriel Deranger, Greg Albo, Jeremy Brecher, Jess Worth, Jesse Cardinal, Joshua Kahn Russell, Lilian Yap, Linda Capato, Macdonald Stainsby, Martin Lukacs, Matt Leonard, Melina Laboucan-Massimo, Naomi Klein, Rae Breaux, Randolph Haluza-DeLay, Rex Weyler, Ryan Katz-Rosene, Sakihitowin Awasis, Sonia Grant, Stephen D'Arcy, Toban Black, Tony Weis, Tyler McCreary, Winona LaDuke, and Yves Engler.

As world leaders eschew cooperation to address climate change, nuclear proliferation, economic meltdown, and other threats to our survival, more and more people experience a pervasive sense of dread and despair. Is there anything we can do? What can put us on the course from mutu...al destruction to common preservation? In the past, social movements have sometimes made rapid and unexpected changes that countered apparently incurable social problems. Jeremy Brecher presents scores of historical examples of people who changed history by adopting strategies of common preservation showing what we can we learn from past social movements to better confront today's global threats of climate change, war, and economic chaos. In Common Preservation, Brecher shares his experiences and what he has learned that can help ward off mutual destruction and provides a unique heuristic--a toolkit for thinkers and activists--to understand and create new forms of common preservation.
