Years before Diana Ross, Mary Wells was the first Motown solo superstar, the internationally popular songstress who sang the megahit My Guy. Her songs consistently and repeatedly reached huge audiences in America and England, both black and white. She captivated the Beatles, tour...ed with them, and was briefly more popular than they were on the pop charts. But Wells was much more than a successful singer with an alluring voice. She also displayed an irrepressible fighting spirit, along with a ferocious belief in her own talent. She left Motown at age 21 and spent the rest of her life trying to fight her way back to the top. Though she never managed to do so, she never gave up her struggle, and the long fight ennobled her. She also had a series of tumultuous affairs and marital attachments with several well-known singers and songwriters. And near the end of her life, Wells fought a drawn-out and courageous battle with throat cancer, giving perhaps her gutsiest performance. Peter Benjaminson has spent years interviewing Wells's friends, lovers, and husbands, and obtained an amazingly detailed unreleased taped interview with Wells herself. In Mary Wells, he tells her whole story, complete with never-before revealed details about the sex, the violence, and the drugs in her life--and about her Motown hits that captivated the world.

An inspirational tale of personal struggle with and triumph over Tourette syndrome, this is the story of Jeff Matovic and the radical treatment he sought to cure himself. After suffering from Tourette's for years--with his tics and outbursts getting progressively worse and with n...o results coming from drugs or physical or spiritual therapy--Jeff was able to convince his doctors and his insurance company to try a risky deep brain stimulation treatment, a surgery that involves the implantation of a pacemaker for the brain into his skull. Penned by a journalist who is also afflicted with Tourette's, this is the incredible story of a friendship that blossomed under their common experiences with this bizarre brain disorder. A complete discussion of the latest medical research of and treatments for Tourette's, written in accessible and easy-to-understand terminology, is also included.

The powers-that-be in auto racing in the 1920s, namely the American Automobile Association's Contest Board, prohibited everyone who wasn't a white male from the sport. Dewey Gaston, a black man who went by the name Rajo Jack, broke into the epicenter of racing in California, refu...sing to let the pervasive racism of his day stop him from competing against entire fields of white drivers. Though Rajo Jack spent his whole life striving to reach the pinnacle of the sport, the Indianapolis 500, the greatest race in the world wouldn't have him. In The Brown Bullet, Bill Poehler uncovers the life of a long-forgotten trailblazer and the great lengths he took to even get on the track, and in the end, tells how Rajo Jack proved to a generation that a black man could compete with some of the greatest white drivers of his era, wining some of the biggest races of the day.
