Indigenous Museology examines the emergence of indigenising museologies in New Zealand, Australia, the USA and Canada. As the first international comparative study of museums and indigenous people, the book produces new knowledge about indigenous ways of knowing, doing and being ...that are emerging from the intersection of museums, heritage and public history with native ontologies and epistemologies. Whilst McCarthy acknowledges the specificities of national contexts, he also takes the time to explore the commonalities and differences between them, thus providing a unique perspective never attempted before.

This book differs from the bulk of existing literature dealing with terrorism by emphasising the historic theoretical and practical foundation to contemporary terrorism, by placing it within the framework of contending hypotheses about international relations, strategic and confl...cit analysis, along with some of the key writings on peace and reconciliation. It argues that terrorism is a logical, and often reasonable, mode for expression of grievances by disenfranchised groups or organisations, which are unable to be heard through normal political processes. In order to understand the potential of terrorism one has to analyse the structures available for effecting dissent and change. Modernisation and globilisation combined with the increased power of states increases the attractiveness of terrorism for disaffected groups. Within this context the study links various groups, forms and regions where terrorism exists. Unlike most studies it does not start from a state-centred bias, ie how to prevent attacks on legitimate states, but assesses terrorism within its own motivations, methods and objectives.

There has been a surge of interest in restorative justice by practitioners and academics, but it remains an elusive term and in many ways means something different to the different people who engage with it. These differences emerge across a variety of settings, such as populatio...n, crime type and setting. Though programs operating the under the umbrella term of Restorative Justice may share a similar philosophy, they may follow different paths to achieve their goals. This book critically evaluates what restorative justice means today in its various different contexts and examines how the current state of research succeeds or fails in capturing the true state of the art. Written by experts in the field, Restorative Justice Practice broadens the field of debate and considers practice in areas such as gendered and sexual violence and post-conflict justice both inside and outside of the western world.

How do parenting styles differ globally? How do different, international, parenting practices impact on children's development? Can we bring together and hybridise different international parenting styles? Intercultural Parenting explores the relationship between family, culture ...and parenting by reviewing established and evolving Western and Eastern parenting styles and their impact on children's development. Authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and neglecting approaches, as well as newer techniques such as helicopter parenting are compared with filial, tiger and training approaches, and mixed parenting styles. Practical application sections show how cultural understanding can help demonstrate how professionals might use the information and ideas in their clinical work, whilst parental questionnaires encourage self-assessment and reflection. Dr. Foo Koong Hean brings together the traditional and evolving approaches to the art of parenting practices and also showcases relatively neglected research on Eastern parenting practices. This book is important reading for childcare professionals such as health visitors, early years' teachers and those in mental health, as well as students in family studies and developmental psychology.

This volume brings together a wide range of scholars to offer new perspectives on the relationship between Romanticism and philosophy. The entanglement of Romantic literature with philosophy is increasingly recognized, just as Romanticism is increasingly viewed as European and Tr...ansatlantic, yet few studies combine these coordinates and consider the philosophical significance of distinctly literary questions in British and American Romantic writings. The essays in this book are concerned with literary writing as a form of thinking, investigating the many ways in which Romantic literature across the Atlantic engages with European thought, from 18th- and 19th-century philosophy to contemporary theory. The contributors read Romantic texts both as critical responses to the major debates that have shaped the history of philosophy, and as thought experiments in their own right. This volume thus examines anew the poetic philosophy of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Blake, Shelley, and Clare, also extending beyond poetry to consider other literary genres as philosophically significant, such as Jane Austen's novels, De Quincey's autofiction, Edgar Allan Poe's tales, or Emerson's essays. Grounded in complementary theoretical backgrounds and reading practices, the various contributions draw on an impressive array of writers and thinkers and challenge our understanding not only of Romanticism, but also of what we have come to think of as literature and philosophy.

Exploring the rhetorical and phenomenological links between shame and reticence, this book examines the psychology of Shelley's anguished poet-Subject. Shelley's struggles with the fragility of the 'self' have largely been seen as the result of thinking which connects emotional h...yperstimulation to moral and political undermining of the individual 'will'. This work takes a different approach, suggesting that Shelley's insecurities stemmed from anxieties about the nature of aesthetic self-representation. Shame is an appropriate affective marker of such anxiety because it occurs at the cusp between internal and external self-evaluation. Shelley's reticent poetics transfers an affective sense of shame to the reader and provokes interpretive responsibility. Paying attention to the affective contours of texts, this book presents new readings of Shelley's major works. These interpretations show that awakening the reader's ethical discretion creates a constructive dynamic which challenges influential deconstructive readings of the unfinished nature of Shelley's work and thought.
