Chinese laundries first opened in the 1880s and were an integral part of New Zealand's social fabric until at least the 1950s. How did they develop in towns from Southland to the far north before slowly disappearing after the 1940s? Who ran them and how did they fit into their co...mmunities? Starch Work by Experts: Chinese Laundries in Aotearoa New Zealand tells the story of the laundrymen, their families and customers. Hand laundries were one of four main occupations for early Chinese settlers, along with mining, market gardening and storekeeping. They provided a low-cost stepping stone to a new life through hard work, skill and long hours. This book counters the stereotype of Chinese laundry work as menial and unskilled. While Chinese laundries were humble establishments, Chinese laundrymen (and women) were experts in starching, particularly men's shirts and detachable collars. Blending documentary research, personal stories and fascinating images, Starch Work by Experts goes beyond the grille to step inside the world of steaming coppers, hissing irons and perfectly starched collars.

In February 2019, after many weeks of drought conditions, an inadvertent incident with a piece of farm machinery led to the worst fires ever experienced in the Tasman region in the upper South Island. As the flames roared over the tinder-dry region, helicopters and fixed wing pla...nes took to the skies with monsoon buckets and other fire-fighting equipment while on the ground a huge number of fire fighters, many of them volunteers, did their best to contain the flames. Meanwhile, hundreds of people were evacuated and before long it was clear that something had to be done about the livestock - both farm animals and domestic pets. Enter Carolyn Press-McKenzie, the co-founder of HUHA NZ, a charitable trust dedicated to teaching empathy to the community and providing shelter for animals in need. She immediately set up facilities at the Richmond Park Showgrounds to house an enormous number of livestock including cows, sheep, goats, pigs, llamas, hens and turkeys. Then there were the dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits and birds, not to mention the army of volunteers that came from near and far to help. And so the idea for But Who's Looking After the Animals? was born and subsequently dedicated to all the wonderful people who stepped up when they were needed during this very difficult and volatile time. It is the publisher's intention to donate a significant proportion of the income from sales to HUHA and the Nelson Ark, a local organisation that at its core is an animal rescue shelter that brings together people, young and old, as participants or volunteers, to learn the value of responsibility and patience.

[But we hope we don't have to.] Every winter, Innkeepers look forward to celebrating their own special holiday, which commemorates the ancient treaty that united the very first Inns and established the rules that protect them, their intergalactic guests, and the very unaware/oblivious people of [planet] Earth. By tradition, the Innkeepers welcomed three guests: a warrior, a sage, and a pilgrim, but during the holiday, Innkeepers must open their doors to anyone who seeks lodging. Anyone. All Dina hopes is that the guests and conduct themselves in a polite manner. But what's a holiday without at least one disaster?
