During the last two decades transnationalism has become an important conceptual approach and research programme. However, the term has steadily become vague and indistinct underlining the need for conceptual precising as well as more defined empirical research. Rethinking Transna...tionalism does this in two ways. On one hand it presents theoretical contributions to the transnationalism approach and, on the other hand, it offers empirical studies in the field of the transnationalization of organizations. The book integrates outstanding international scholars of transnationalism and migration studies with specialists from a broad variety of disciplines that apply the transnationalism approach to different organizations such as NGOs, feminist networks, educational spaces and European Works Councils. Presenting an overview of transnationalism and the surrounding debates, this interdisciplinary volume will be of interest to students and scholars of Politics, International Relations, Sociology, Anthropology, Educational Sciences, Migration and Geography.

This book combines transnational, intersectional and cultural-sociological perspectives to develop a conceptual tool to analyze patterns, contexts and mechanisms of cross-border inequalities. First, synthesizing the theories of social boundaries and of intersectionality, it appro...aches patterns of social inequalities as intersectionally-produced sociocultural boundaries, with gender, ethnicity / race, class and several other categories being sets of unequal social relations. Cross-border inequalities are analysed as spatialized inequalities, with space (which includes the cross-border categories global and transnational ) considered as a specific type of sociocultural boundaries. Second, in line with assemblage theory, the societal contexts of cross-border inequalities such as the EU are then conceptualized as assemblages that are shaped by an interplay of spatialized and other types of inequalities. Third, the mechanisms of cross-border inequalities are analysed as regimes of intersection that relate spatialized cross-border inequalities to other types of unequal social relations such as gendered, ethnicized/racialized and class-related inequalities. Examples of such regimes of intersection include regulations on migration, internationalization programmes at universities, diversity policies and even family memories. To illustrate the conceptual elements developed in this way, the book provides evidence from empirical research on migration and mobility in Europe, specifically from research on recent migration between Ukraine and Germany, and addresses these developments as processes that are paradigmatic for the study of spatialized cross-border inequalities in general, and for the study of the transnationalized forms they involve in particular.

Every day newspapers in the Western world carry articles about illegal immigrants, asylum seekers and other migrants. The focus of these articles varies greatly from migrants as a threat to one or another important social or societal interest, to migrants as an important asset to... those same interests. The tone is most often emotional - whichever way the focus goes. The overall impact is to confuse: is migration good or bad? In this book Guild and van Selm seek to investigate these value assessments regarding migrants in Europe, the USA, Canada and Australia. While looking at issues such as security, human rights, legal systems, identity, racism, welfare, health and labour, the authors also respond to critics of immigration.
