The astonishing, break-out critical discovery of the Venice Film Festival, where it was awarded Best Director and Best Debut Film, Xavier Legrands heart-stopping French drama CUSTODY charts a familys struggles with the fallout of divorce, and the resulting impact on the two child...ren. Miriam (La Drucker, The Blue Room) and Antoine (Denis Mnochet, The Returned) have recently separated. While shes willing to permit their 17-year-old daughter Josephine (Mathilde Auneveux) to decide living arrangements for herself, Miriam is desperate to keep her youngest, 11-year-old Julien (Thomas Gioria), away from his father. But the magistrate rules in favour of joint-custody, and suddenly the boy is thrown directly into the middle of an escalating parental conflict, where it seems inevitable that sides must be chosen. Superbly observed and flawlessly acted (the heartrending performances of the two children are more than worth the price of admission), Legrands precise dissection of this family dynamic masterfully builds into a pulse-pounding thriller. Honest, yet still evoking profound sympathy for all its protagonists, CUSTODY is sure to be remembered as one of the most important and vital films of 2018.

The breakout French hit of the 2017 Cannes International Film Festival, where it premiered in the Directors Fortnight to multiple, raucous standing ovations, writer/director Carine Tardieus charming romantic comedy JUST TO BE SURE is a winning tale of parenthood, love and family,... both lost and found. When lonely 45-year-old widower Erwan (the remarkable Franois Damiens, The Blier Family) discovers by accident that that man who raised him isnt his real father, he begins a search for his biological one. Thanks to a local private detective he soon locates the mischievous, 70-something Joseph (Le Havres Andre Wilms), whom it seems his mother may have known briefly. Erwan soon falls not only for his charm, but that of the impetuous Anna (a radiant Ccile de France), who has ties to them both. But the conflicting loyalties become compounded by the pregnancy of his own daughter (Alice de Lencquesaing), who defiantly refuses to name the father very soon Erwans families begin to collide, to unexpected, hilarious and moving effect. Offering a terrific showcase for her brilliant cast, director Carine Tardieu skillfully weaves a wholly-entertaining exploration of love, coincidence and human connection. Few films manage to pluck both the heartstrings and the funny bone as well as JUST TO BE SURE. Its a delight.

Its been seven years since Jean Dujardin charmed his way to an Oscar for his sparkling turn in The Artist, and since then few films have made optimum use of his star presence. This has been rectified with I Feel Good, the new film from directors Benot Delpine and Gustave Kervern,... a quirky anti-capitalist comedy that delivers a Dujardin performance of unmistakably x-factor charm and complexity. As established in the OSS series, Dujardin has a knack for playing the dashing idiot: here he is Jacques, an unstable neer-do-well with perennial delusions of grandeur. The circumstances behind his fall from grace are metered out gradually, alongside the story of his long-suffering sister Monique (Yolande Moreau, sublime) who has seen her own marriage and finances crumble, and now runs a spiritual development community in the south. When Jacques reappears in Moniques life, its not to have a family reunion, but rather to pitch an outlandish idea to make them both rich An hilarious tale of clashing worldviews and the journey to self-improvement, I Feel Good heads in several unexpected directions, with moments of outrageous comedy mixed with humanism in a film that has more than a hint of Preston Sturgess. It delivers on its title, in spades.
